Writing

Welcome to British Dressage’s Writer Training Package

British Dressage commissioned this training package as a response to comments made in its volunteering survey during 2011, which suggested that some help starting out would be appreciated by the many volunteers who write for list judges during tests in competitions. Without Writers and other volunteers, competitions simply could not take place.

What to do

1. Follow the link to the introductory video Writer Training Video and watch that – it only lasts for 44 seconds.

2. Download and read the document – Tips and guidelines for writers

3. You will need to choose which test you wish to practice, from the list of links below, (newcomers might try Preliminary 19), click on the link, download and print.  It will print in black and white onto two sheets of A4, as the real sheets used in competitions are A3 but most people don’t have an A3 printer at home.  There is an option for printing the full test as A4, but at that size there isn’t enough room in which to write the judge’s comments.

Preliminary 19 Novice 35 Elementary 53

4. Follow the link to one of the videos for the test sheet you have chosen – there are three different videos for Preliminary 19, three more for Novice 35 and two for Elementary 53. The two for Elementary 53 have an additional commentary at the beginning, with some tips for Writers practicing more difficult tests.

Preliminary 19 Novice 35 Elementary 53
Horse 1 Horse 4 Horse 7
Horse 2 Horse 5 Horse 8
Horse 3 Horse 6

5. As you play the video, the judge’s voice will be heard as if in a real test – all you need to do is to write for her in real time on the sheet you downloaded and printed in step 3.

6. When you’ve finished, download the relevant completed test sheet. The final number, 01 to 08, tells you which horse and ties to the number shown on the video. This is not designed to print.

Preliminary 19 Novice 35 Elementary 53
Horse 1 Horse 4 Horse 7
Horse 2 Horse 5 Horse 8
Horse 3 Horse 6

7. This is the test sheet as completed during the video filming, against which you can check your written test
There are 8 different tests and videos for you to use as practice. We hope you find it helpful and approach your first Writer real duty with confidence – have a great day!

Many thanks to our judge for the day, Helen Bradley; to our willing volunteers, Louise Wood with Ticket To Ride, Joanne Andrews with Good Step and Donn Davi Donn, and Laura Connaughton with Callaghan for agreeing to be filmed riding their horses; to Aintree International Arena for the use of their facilities for the day; to Chris Atkin for filming; and Kathy Cline-Hughes for pulling it all together.

Please note: the horses used in the videos are wearing boots or bandages, as this was a demonstration, which would not be permitted in a competition.
