Britain’s para dressage stars were out in force for the season opener at Addington Equestrian, Buckinghamshire, as the path to Paris began on home soil (11 – 13 March 2024).

ZD1 0024{Monday 11Th March CPEDI3 Star Para Grand Prix A III 307 Erin Orford C Fatal Attraction

Britain’s Team medallists were out in force and enjoyed success in the International arena at Addington. Sophie Wells returned to the arena with Lady Joseph Trust’s LJT Egebjerggards Samoa, the fleet-footed mare by Blue Horse St Schufro continues to come of age on every performance and took home a trio of wins in the CPEDI 3* Grade V competition. Her highest score came in the Grand Prix Freestyle, where Mary Robins (NZL), Sarah Leitch (GBR) and Marco Orsini (GER) rewarded the combination with 78.842% and a unanimous victory.

Erin Orford (pictured above) also returned to winning ways with a new iron in the fire, Charlotte Hogg’s C Fatal Attraction. ‘Jorge’ has earned much success in International para competition with long-term rider Sophie Wells in the saddle; now competing under Erin in the Grade III category, the 17-year-old gelding once again met winning form with a clean sweep of 3* wins. The duo recorded an impressive 77.445% in the Grand Prix B test, before Erin’s second ride, Sophie Wells and Neil and Jackie Walker’s Dragons Fire enjoyed his time to shine in the Freestyle.

Speaking on social media Erin commented, “What a week! After a one-two on Monday, Tuesday was all about C Fatal Attraction (aka super J / Jorge). He gave me a great ride to win the class on over 77% - an International PB for me and a top score of the day! Only one horse could go through to the Freestyle and since Jorge doesn't have a music yet Wednesday was Nero's time in the spotlight! He was fab and I rode slower to take the win on 76.9% an International PB for us!

“I feel so privileged to ride these horses so I can't thank Sophie Wells enough for all her support and these opportunities, along with their owners Charlotte Hogg (Jorge) and Jackie Walker, Valerie Woolford, Diana Gallon & Sophie (Nero). Also huge thanks to Mum and Dad for grooming all week (even dragging my Auntie in to help!) and to my sponsors, and the British Equestrian World Class squad.”

Grade II starlet Georgia Wilson brought Sakura and Faside Got The Love to Addington and was another rider to enjoy a hat-trick of victories. The experienced Sakura (Supertramp x Rockstar) was ever-consistent in her scores, achieving 71.322% (Grand Prix A), 71.056%(Grand Prix B) and 76.967% (Grand Prix Freestyle) throughout the week.

Nicola Naylor and Humberto, the Cachet-sired 12-year-old, were another combination to take centre stage and show their top form at the first domestic international competition of the year. They notched up three 3* Grade IV wins, including a one-two for Nicola in Tuesday’s Grand Prix B competition where she also claimed second place with Kallista’s Furstenlooks UVA.

Of the overseas competitors, Ireland’s Michael Murphy celebrated St Patrick’s Day with a trio of 3* Grade I wins, tipping his cap at potential summer success to come. With Bronte Watson’s beautiful black gelding Cleverboy (Vivaldi x Kenndy), Michael earned the highest score of the show with 79.722% in the Grand Prix Freestyle. There was more success for Ireland as Clodagh Walsh presented Alan Walsh’s mare Chantal in the 1* Grade I competition, earning three strong scores for three wins. Whilst the flag flew for Hong Kong in the 2* Grade II tour as Lok Yee Louie Lam earned a trio of top spots.

The week was jam-packed with success for British riders. In the 1* competition there were wins for Cheshire’s Jessica Pritchard (Grade III) and Lancashire-based BD Youth rider Ellie Hamilton (Grade II); whilst Grade 1 rising star Elan Williams added more international victories to her record in the 2* contest. Liz McBurney earned a 2* hat-trick with her own British-bred Bangalore C in the Grade V category, whilst Roseanne Knox (With Love JM) and Janet Cummings (Rhonderful Dorrells) shared the 2* Grade III accolades across the week, with Roseanne taking the opening two tests and Janet coming out on top in the Freestyle. Sara Bates, hailing from Alcester in Warwickshire, made a return to international competition having made her debut at Bishop Burton in 2019 and earned three wins in the 2* Grade IV tests with Patty Allen’s Sandro Hit-sired gelding Solo Hit 2.
