Germany’s Isabell Werth and Satchmo (pictured) proved unbeatable in the CDIO tour at Aachen in Germany, 2-6 July 2008, which is considered to be the one of the greatest shows in the world.
Satchmo, who is the reigning grand prix special European champion, won the grand prix, grand prix special and freestyle.
British-based Finnish rider Kyra Kyrklund, who has been placed consistently in the top 10 in the world at major championships for many years, took fifth place in the grand prix with more than 69% riding the 13-year-old Swedish Warmblood gelding Max. She repeated this placing in the special, this time scoring more than 71% and in the freestyle, her speciality, she moved up to fourth place with 75.9%.
Britain’s Anna Ross-Davies and Liebling took 26th with 64.5% in the grand prix and 23rd in the special with 64.44% while Olympic team reserve Maria Eilberg and Two Sox were 27th in the grand prix with 64.083% and moved up to 21st in the special with 65.12%.
Britain’s team captain Richard Davison said: “It was not the most successful with regard to the riders’ percentages, but it was most educational and useful for the future. Anna’s horse blew up here last year and she wanted to lay some ghosts to rest, which she did. Maria has always wanted to ride at Aachen, but she was a little overawed by the show’s aura and has learned a valuable lesson which all riders have to go through at some stage. From my perspective, both riders have achieved what they set out to do.”
