BD Winter Regionals: Bishop Burton

The second Winter Regional Championships took place this week at Bishop Burton, Yorks (11 – 14 February).

Dominating the Elementary and Medium classes was Grimsby-based rider Lara Dyson with Laura and Tracy Milner’s talented black gelding Jazzed Up. The eye-catching pair (pictured) took victories in three championship classes and came a close second in a fourth. In the Equi-Trek Elementary Gold the pair scored 74.38% for the win before going on to finish a close runner up to Gary Foggon with Gypsy Fortune.

Trotting into the arena for a second day Lara and ‘Felix’ took the Albion Medium Gold with 72.93% before going on to score 78.22% in the Spillers Medium Gold Freestyle to earn their third regional title and the highest score of the show. Speaking about Felix (Jazz x Ferro) to British Dressage Lara said, “due to his success at the Regionals last year I will admit I was a little nervous this year, very unlike me. But I had no reason to be, he was brilliant from the first day to the last, he's the first horse I have ever ridden that is so easy in the arena and just gives you everything he's got and more, he makes it feel effortless all the way round”.

Also excelling in multiple championship classes was 13-year-old Lily Payne with Ann Savage’s British bred-mare Beckhouse Cancarra. Lily and ‘Cara’ scored 73.30% in the Baileys Horse Feeds Novice Gold Freestyle and 73.78% in the PDS Saddles Elementary Silver Freestyle riding to music by Julie Geraghty. Double Regional titles were a great birthday present for Lily who celebrated her 13th as she rode down the centre line on Saturday 11 February. Talking about her regional experience Lily said, ‘I had the most amazing time and was delighted with my tests and would just like to thank everyone that has supported me especially my mum and Cara's owner Ann Savage. I'm really looking forward to the Championships.’

Another young rider to taste Regional success was 22-year-old Victoria Maw with Bon Rouge who scored a fantastic win in the Magic Prix St Georges Freestyle. Victoria and ‘Ben’ scored 69.83% to top the leader board with Darryl Thickitt and Cara Shardlow rounding out the top three. Victoria, from Roxby, has trained the chestnut gelding through the levels from novice after she bought him as a green six-year-old. The elegant pair completed their first Grand Prix test in 2016 and are members of the BEF Excel Talent Squad.

Standing out in the silver classes was Lucinda Elliot with MSJ Diva Dannebrog. Lucinda, resident rider at Emma Blundell’s Mount St John Stud, continues her record of Regional success adding a further two titles to her collection this time with the eight-year-old mare by Don Schufro. The pair won the Blue Chip Novice Silver with 71.85% before going on to win the Equi-Trek Elementary Silver with an almost identical score of 71.82%.

Congratulations to all combinations who qualified for the NAF Five Star Winter Championships in April and to all those who took part. British Dressage thanks Bishop Burton College for another successful Regional Championships.
