Emma Hindle (pictured) and Lancet produced a clear round in the grand prix special (GPS) to score 70.44% for ninth place, which qualifies them for the final stage of the individual competition.
This comprises two rounds. The top 25 from the team competition qualified for the GPS. The top 15 from the GPS then qualify for the freestyle, which takes place on Tuesday 19 August in Hong Kong. The scores of the special and freestyle are added together to decide the medals.
Emma, who finished individual fourth in the team competition with the 15-year-old stallion, said: “My result is more than I ever dreamed of as we had our ups and downs this season. I’m really proud of the way he coped with the atmosphere and conditions and I have proved to myself I can do it when it really matters.”
Second to go in the GPS, Laura Bechtolsheimer and Mistral Hojris, produced a much more settled performance than in the team competition to score 67.16% and finish 18th. The volatile 13-year-old Danish Warmblood gelding only had one momentary spook in the last piaffe, but his 23-year-old rider was quick to calm him down.
“I’m pleased with our performance but disappointed by the score. At other competitions he has put in a similar test and scored well into the 70’s, but this is the Olympics. I am thrilled I managed to come back into the ring and pull off a solid performance and I’m proud of my horse. I’m certainly much happier now!”
British-based Finnish rider Kyra Kyrklund and Max are also through to the freestyle after finishing 10th in the GPS.
