Britain’s Fiona Bigwood and her Danish partner Anders Dahl, who are based in Germany, have retired the 18-year-old Afrikka from competition.
Dahl took over the ride on the Danish-bred Oldenburg gelding when Fiona was expecting their first child in 2006. Dahl and Afrikka were Denmark’s most successful grand prix combination in 2007 and finished in the top 10 at the 2008 World Cup Finals.
Bigwood and her mother Penny have owned Afrikka since a three-year-old and Fiona trained him up to international grand prix level, competing at Aachen CDIO in 2003.
He will be turned out with Bigwood’s other pensioners, Habana and Macho, and will be moving back to Britain in the autumn when the Bigwood family relocates.
