One of Britain’s leading para riders Sophie Christiansen has been nominated for The Sunday Times Paralympian of the Year 2008. A total of 10 awards will be presented at The Sunday Times Sportswomen of the Year Awards 2008 at Lord’s Cricket Ground on Thursday 12 February 2009.
The Sunday Times readers submitted nominations online and a prestigious judging panel chaired by BBC 5 Live sports broadcaster Eleanor Oldroyd will choose the winners. Other judges include Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson and sports broadcaster Jill Douglas.
Also judging is UK Sport head of policy Amanda Bennett, who said: “The Beijing Olympics and Paralympics proved just how much female athletes contribute to British sporting success and this event provides the perfect opportunity to celebrate their achievements.
“It is fantastic to have such a strong line-up of nominations and indeed this is one of the best years yet for this particular awards ceremony. The judging panel have some extremely difficult decisions to make.”
The event is in association with David Lloyd Leisure and is also being sponsored by Sport England, UK Sport and CCPR. The Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation is also lending its support and is the event’s charity partner.
