2009 Northern Winter Final: three titles for Brightman

Beverley Brightman’s winter training paid off handsomely when she won three titles on three different horses at the Northern Winter Final at Willerby Hill, North Yorkshire, 24-27 February 2009.
She headed the prix st georges freestyle with David and Catherine Witt’s Don Hill. Now for sale, Brightman has trained the 11-year-old stallion by Don Gregory for the past four years.
She took the medium freestyle with her mother Susan Watts’s De Delux (pictured). The 16.3hh nine-year-old bay Oldenburg gelding by De Niro is on the World Class Programme and Brightman has ridden him for two years.
Brightman rode another horse on the WC Programme to head the medium open, Gutsherr II. She has also had the ride on this 16.1hh nine-year-old Trakehner gelding by Oxford for two years.
“He is owned by the Leo syndicate and is known as ‘Leo’ because all three owners have their birthdays in August. He decided to grow up today and I could get stuck in and show off what he can do for the first time,” she said.
Brightman was particularly proud of her fourth place in the high-scoring elementary open freestyle with another 16.1hh nine-year-old bay gelding she has ridden for just three months. She scored 70% with Devil May Care, a full Thoroughbred who was hunting in Cornwall this time last year.
