Spencer Wilton and Dolendo won the grand prix special at the Hartpury CDI in Gloucestershire, 5-9 July 2006, beating British team members Laura Bechtolsheimer and Emma Hindle.
Dolendo, a 12-year-old 17.2hh chestnut gelding by Donnerhall owned by Ann Cory, scored more than 70% in the special, having finished fifth on 66% in the grand prix.
Carl Hester, who rode Dolendo as a three-year-old and gave the ride to his partner Spencer four years ago, said: “Dolendo pulled a ligament in his foot after Hartpury last year and had six-months’ rest. In the past, he has been nervous and naughty, but I always felt he was capable of being a team horse. He gained confidence in the grand prix and then got his best ever results in the special. It was amazing – the crowd just erupted in applause when his score was announced.”
Laura Bechtolsheimer won the grand prix with Douglas Dorsey on 69.87%, with Emma Hindle and Lancet second.
Germany’s Nicole Glaser-Kappeler headed the popular grand prix freestyle with Floriano Deux, a 15-year-old gelding by Floristan.
Carl scored a personal best and dominated the small tour with Da Vinci III at only their second show together, having ridden him for just a couple of months. Carl achieved his highest international small tour score riding Rowan Lewis’ eight-year-old 16.2hh stallion by Donnerhall. They won the intermediaire I some 5% clear of the competition on 75% and the prix st georges with more than 70%.
“Rowan bought Da Vinci because he is so nice and safe. Then Rowan asked me to ride him a bit and it’s gone from there. He has a temperament to die for,” said Carl.
There were also British high-scoring wins in the international para competition, which ran concurrently with the CDI. Anne Dunham won the Grade Ia class with 75.8%, Lee Pearson and Blue Circle Boy took the Grade 1b with 78.2% while Simon Laurens and Ocean Diamond scored 72.5% to head the Grade III section.
