The Eastern Prada team topped the field in the 2009 BYRDS Inter Regional Team competition on 11-12 July. Thirty seven teams from all over Scotland, Wales and England converged on Keysoe for two days of competition. This year for the first time all tests ridden over the weekend were ‘rider tests’ as opposed to dressage tests. In line with the ethos of BYRDS, these tests, which give the judges a chance to comment on features such as the seat and effectiveness of the aids, and harmony with the horse, are all aimed at improving the standard of riding amongst our younger members. Islay Auty, director of BYRDS commented, “Every year the standard of the competition has risen, and every year it is wonderful to realise that we have so much talent coming up.”
A Squad Champion for 2009 was Abbie Hughes riding Weronella for the South West Region. “I’ve had a great weekend,” said Hughes. “After this success I am really looking forward to Hartpury.” The B Squad champion was Jessica Viney, riding Mister Patrick for the North West region. Jessica beat Welsh rider Stena Hoerner to the title by just 0.9 of a mark. Harry Wakeman was C Squad champion, riding Woodside Way for the Northern region, and completing the individual placings was Fledgling champion Rebecca Bell from the Central Region on her pony Sunwillow Gundegai.
In the team competition the Eastern Prada team took the2009 championship. The team was made up of Michelle Watson, Georgina Weedon, Sam Hawkins and Bethany Rose Horobin. Team member Michelle Watson commented on the win: “It’s been a long time coming, but it was worth the wait!” Lorrie Sisson, BYRDS Rep for the East said: “I am so proud of them all. They have worked so hard for this, have all behaved beautifully over the weekend, and have been a joy to work with.”
