Germany’s Isabell Werth won the grand prix special and the first of two individual gold medals on offer at the 2006 World Equestrian Games in Aachen, snatching victory from the reigning world champion, Holland’s Anky van Grunsven.

The 37-year-old Isabell rode her reserve horse, the 12-year-old Hannoverian gelding Satchmo after having to withdraw Warum Nicht at the last minute. They produced a fault-free test to score 79.48%, which gave Isabell her third individual gold WEG medal.

Anky van Grunsven and the 12-year-old Hannoverian gelding Keltec Salinero scored 77.8% for silver while Denmark’s Andreas Helgstrand and the Danish mare Blue Hors Matine, the youngest horse in the class, took bronze with 76.56%.

All four members of Britain’s team went through to the special with Emma Hindle and her 13-year-old Hannoverian stallion Lancet producing the best British results, as she did in the team competition, with 17th place on 69.12%. They go through to tomorrow night’s grand prix freestyle, for which the second set of individual medals will be awarded.

Laura Bechtolsheimer and Douglas Dorsey scored 67.64% to finish 21st, Wayne Channon and Lorenzo CH took 23rd place with 66.44% while Sandy Phillips and Lara came equal 27th on 65.28%.

Emma is due to ride her freestyle at 8pm CET tomorrow, Saturday, 26 August.
