Dressage riders Laura B, Carl Hester, Andrew Gould, Michael and Maria Eilberg were to be found strutting their stuff on the catwalk last Saturday night in aid of a good cause. They joined top riders from eventing, show jumping and racing to model the latest equestrian fashions at a charity evening dinner held at Newbury racecouse on 16th January 2010.
With coaching from former event rider and professional catwalk model Laura Toogood the riders let their hair down in an evening of fun and frolics to show off the latest in equestrian and fashion wear. The event was a great success, raising £10,000 for Spinal research and the Claire Lomas walk campaign.
Event organiser Claire Lomas commented: “They were all fantastic, helping contribute to a great night and the audience loved it. The underwear section wasn’t popular with the models - Carl gave a definite no for that, but they were all stars! I went to a similar rugby event and I thought we could do this in the horse world. It really worked! I have had lots of positive feedback; thanks to everyone who helped in anyway.”
Spinal Research is the UK’s leading charity funding medical research around the world to develop reliable treatments for paralysis caused by a broken back or neck. Claire Lomas is the face of their Saddle Up Campaign, an appeal that focuses on helping people with spinal injuries from riding accidents. Claire, an extremely talented event rider had a freak accident while competing at Osberton Horse Trials in May 2007. She suffered fractures to her neck, back and ribs that have left her paralysed but Claire hasn't given up and is determined that she will walk and ride again.
