Melissa Beer achieved two wins at the Midlands Winter Regional Championships, Addington Manor EC, Bucks 19 – 21 February 2010. Riding her own Celestial King, a 17 year old Dutch-bred gelding by Balzflug, she won the Advanced Medium and Prix St Georges Music Freestyles with 73.27% and 70.41% respectively.

“I’m really happy with him,” said a delighted Beer. “For the advanced medium I warmed him up for longer than usual as he can be too fresh, and it paid off. There weren’t any mistakes and it helps that we know that test so well.”

“We haven’t been doing PSG for that long so I was thrilled – it was one of the best PSG’s we’ve done,” said Beer. “Our music is a compilation of Bond, the string quartet, for the walk and trot and we have Spanish music for the canter. It’s really upbeat and suits him.”

Beer, who represented Great Britain at last year’s Junior European Championships said: “This year will be my first in Young Riders and I’ll aim for the team as well as possibly stepping up to Inter I. Since moving to Sarah Millis’s his way of going has improved. Sarah has put the polish on everything and I’ve been able to replicate it in the arena.”

Another combination to score a double was Sadie Smith and Sandra Kirkpatrick’s five year old gelding Ambience IV. They scored the highest non-freestyle score of the show, 72.12%, to head a large field of 43 in the Preliminary. They then took Novice Restricted Music Freestyle section A with 73.52%.
