Equine Influenza outbreak in Surrey
last updated on June 16, 2010 16:49
On 7th June 2010 equine influenza has been diagnosed in three horses in a yard in Surrey, UK. Diagnosis was confirmed by the Animal Health Trust on the basis of positive nucleoprotein (NP) ELISA on a nasopharyngeal swab. There are eight horses in the premises and most of them are affected at the moment; clinical signs include pyrexia, nasal discharge and cough. One of the positive cases was vaccinated for EI in February 2010 whereas the other two positives have never been vaccinated. The source of infection is believed to have been a horse that arrived at the yard a week ago; this horse was showing signs when it first arrived on the premises but the NP ELISA was negative when tested along with the other three positives. Investigations and further sampling of the in-contacts are ongoing.
