Hickstead CDI3*/5*: Double for Davison & Hester scoops 5* win

Richard Davison and the Countess of Derby’s Hiscox Artemis (pictured) scored their seventh consecutive CDI win with taking the grand prix and grand prix special at Hickstead’s CDI3*. It follows on a string of victories that also include this season’s first World Cup Qualifier. “He just keeps returning 70% plus results, which is great and reflects his progression,” said Richard who may well take in the Nationals with the Florestan I gelding before continuing with the World Cup series through the winter.
With his ‘British Team Captain’ hat on Richard was also delighted to see Carl Hester and Liebling returning to competition. “It is as if they had never been separated,” added Richard, “they have lost none of their understanding and with a few more weeks will be right back to their old magic.” The win came despite Carl suffering from the aftermath of flu, “I was snivelling all over him and I wasn’t sure I’d be able to breathe to ride through the test, not that I got any sympathy from Richard who told me not to be so wet and get on with it,” said Carl, “but it was lovely to be riding him again and even though the pressure was on to get the percentage it was a joy to be back competing him.”
Carl also had the satisfaction of watching his six-year-old Don Archie claim the British Young Horse International title with Charlotte Dujardin in the saddle.
The withdrawal of Moorlands Totilas robbed Hickstead of its crowning glory but Jerich Parzival shone bright in his absence scoring over 79.78% in the grand prix and 85.65% in the freestyle for Adelinde Cornelissen. “It is wonderful to be able to give so many good marks,” said judge Stephen Clarke, “Parzival was powerful and dramatic without a hint of a mistake and I was also very impressed with Australian rider Brett Parbury who was second behind Carl in the Special. A great example of training enhancing the natural talents of the horse. Brett’s ride Victory Salute, homebred by owner and FEI judge herself Caroline Lieutenant, picked up a bronze at the Beijing Paralympics with Georgia Bruce in the saddle.
Gareth Hughes couldn’t hide his delight after his own and Ann Newton’s Duvie won three out of three in the small tour, “the last time he came here was for the young horse classes and he got very frightened so that was in the back of my mind,” said Gareth, “but he was fantastic - he felt a bit tired by the third test but he really stepped up to the plate.”
