High Scores at the Summer South West Regionals

The South West Regionals at Kingston Maurward, Dorset 3-5 August 2010, were characterised by some big percentages with the majority if not actually breaking the 70% barrier being extremely close.

Highest of all was novice open winner Christian Landolt with his Don Ruto gelding Don Jovi (pictured) scoring 74.29% in what was a huge class. The six year old has had limited outings of late having picked up a virus after Hickstead’s Premier League. “He missed all the Young Horse Championships he qualified for,” said Christian, “and it is only in the last week he has really felt himself again so we did come here a little under prepared.” The gelding was bought just under a year ago, “He has his moments, I broke three ribs the first time I rode him,” added Christian, “but then coming from an eventing background I don’t mind the quirks and he really is a Ferrari of a horse. I am on the point of looking for another youngster to follow on but I know that everything I sit on will fall short after him.”

Jackie Stolper went home with the intermediate I and elementary open tickets courtesy of Wunderstag and Exposito. The latter, by Ehrentusch, is owned by Teresa Thompson and came from the same farm as Jackie’s Der Schufro and Luciano Pavarotti. “He did well in the young horse classes last year,” said Jackie, “this year they wouldn’t even look at him but he has won today and is going to The College for the medium regionals there.”

Alice Oppenheimer also went home with a good haul of rosettes which included firsts from both the intermediate I and the advanced medium open, and five tickets to the nationals in total. Her advanced medium and medium winner Headmore Delegate took his regional championship tally to ten, having won four at this year’s winter regionals to add to previous successes. The Dimaggio son who has just been out on the Equine Pathway scheme is homebred out of a PSG mare and Alice is aiming for Small Tour with him next season. Wurlizer is another British bred horse and was bought locally. “We were looking for something to go onto after ponies and we made one trip to Sweden but found the right one just down the road,” said Alice, “we had him on loan initially and then bought him and he’s a star. That was the best test he has done this year. I knew he was capable of one like that and to get it at the regionals was great.”
