Riding on home turf is not always easy as horses can, and do over react to a ‘party’ in the backyard, but  Oldencraig's Vicki Thompson-Winfield and Toni Terry’s Beltoni (pictured) ignored all the excitement and won both the Advanced Medium and Medium Open Championships. The son of Bellisimo was bred by the Pidgleys’ out of a Rubinstein mare and won his stallion grading. “He’s definitely better for the more challenging test,” said Vicki, “and is so mature in the arena, he’s never done two tests in one day before but he took it all in his stride. He’s an awesome talent and so happy to work with the rider.”

  Matt Hicks scored a one/two in the Elementary Open with El Zorro and Excalibur. El Zorro is owned by Jackie and Tamsin Vaughan and was bought as a three-year-old from his breeder in Holland. “They bought him as a possible event horse but he came to me to do a bit of dressage and I love him,” said Matt. Excalibur is a horse that Matt part owns with Annie Holloway, “he was bought at auction abroad but grew too big for Annie,” added Matt, “she didn’t want to sell him so he came to me and I ended up having a share in him.”

Jonathon Snowden, winner of the Medium Restricted with his homebred Paper Tiger IV fits in dressage around his job as an actuary, which means riding very early in the morning. Paper Tiger is by Java Tiger out of an Irish-bred mare by Santa’s Sleigh. Initially he was ridden by Ruth Edge who competed him to novice level eventing and won six regional championships alongside top ten placings at the Nationals. Jonathon himself is still eventing the gelding and plans more outings before the Nationals in September, “we both really enjoy it” he said.

Sarah Hall from Oldencraig won the Preliminary class on Oldencraig Adonis, whilst in the Novice Restricted reigning Winter Preliminary and Novice Restricted Champion Sadie Synett Smith and Ambience IV set themselves up for the chance at another title, winning with 73.93%.
