Britain's under 21 squads

Britain has four under-21 squads made up of riders in contention for a place on the team for the European Championships.

One of Britain’s top riders and trainers, Peter Storr, coaches the pony riders while former national dressage champion Nicky Barrett helps the juniors and young riders.

Being on the British Young Rider Dressage Scheme (BYRDS) national training programme is a good route to being selected for a squad, but it is not a pre-requisite.

You need to be capable of consistently scoring at least 68% in FEI (Fédération Equestre Internationale) team tests to be considered for a place on a team for the European Championships. All premier league shows hold FEI team tests for ponies, juniors and young riders. Some of these shows will be part of the selection process and nominated shows will be compulsory for European team hopefuls. Click here to read the 2008 under-21 selection policy document.

Send your progress forms, which log your competition results, on a regular basis to your chief selector at the address below. The forms are enclosed with the BYRDS information pack, which is available from British Dressage (BD). If you would like a BYRDS information pack or need more progress charts, contact Karen Ryder (tel: 024 76 698840) or Jeanette Proctor (tel: 024 76 698845) at BD.

As a squad member, you will be invited to compete abroad. You will have to fund all your own international competitions apart from the European Championships. Riders will also need to cover the costs of any chef d’equipes.

Dates for the 2008 European Championships are:
Ponies
24-27 July
Avenches, Switzerland
Juniors and young riders
14-20 July
Azeitao, Portugal
