    .
  • 2/8/11 - TOP TIP FROM SPORTS PSYCHOLOGIST - If you are heading to the Summer Regionals in the next few weeks you should already be visualising your dressage test every day. Visualising your test is going to help you do two things. First, it’s going to help you memorise your test. Don’t just learn the movements. Learn what aids you are giving your horse, your body position etc. Secondly, when you visualise the perfect ride, you program your subconscious mind to ride correctly. That’s because when you do “perfect practice” in your mind’s eye, your muscles will work in the correct way - fab!  So look forward to seeing you all at the Nationals then!

  INTRODUCTION

HELLO FROM THE EASTERN REGION!
2011 - another great year in the East!  Oue teams did great jobs at both the Inter Regional and Home International Competitions,  lots of riders through to regional finals and Area Festivals, and quite a few at both the Winter and National Championships.  On the training front, things have gone from strength to strength.  We have held clinics, test riding sessions, viewing days and general training.  Both BYRDS and Senior camps continue to be very popular, and seniors have been so successful that we now run a second camp each year.    We didn't manage to retain our titles at the Inter Regionals or the Home International - so there is everything to play for in 2012 for both BYRDS and Senior Riders.  We also held our inagural County Challenge in 2011 year, which proved to be really popular and things are already hotting up for the 2012 challenge!
.
The regional committee in the East is made up of very experienced volunteers who help me in my role by providing technical know how, advice, ideas and support - BD in the East would not exist without them.  They are:  Rachel Hillier (Chairman) List 2 Judge and Trainer, also the brains behind the Talent Spotting event and previous Pony Selector.  Eleanor Collins (BYRDS Rep) Trainer and very experienced with BYRDS, having helped to form our existing BYRDS 11 years ago, and been involved ever since.  Dan Sherriff (Coaches Rep) Trainer and International Grand Prix Rider, bringing a wealth of experience to the job.  Paul Hayler (Rider Rep) List 1 Judge, Trainer and Grand Prix Rider, Paul has been involved with dressage in the East via EDLG and BD for many years, and it is many of his ideas that you see working in the region, and indeed nationally, today.  Pam Bushell (Judges Rep) List 3a Judge with lots of enthusiasm for helping other judges get better training and move up the levels.  Barbara Angel (Para Rep) List 2 Judge and RDA National Judge, Barbara has many years experience with dressage and RDA and is the perfect person to move our para riders forward.  Hayley Liddiard (Members Rep)  List 3 Judge and Trainer, Hayley is also a rider and is often out and about at shows ready to hear your views and ideas for BD - so do stop and have a chat with her!

INFORMATION FOR ALL
Listed below are several events run by other people, but all related to dressage as well as news from the region, so please read on and see if anything takes your fancy!

THE INTER COUNTY CHALLENGE 2012

 17 June 2012 – Norton Heath

This event is aimed at giving you a chance to train locally and then compete for your county. We have in place, County Coordinators in each of our Eastern Regional counties, and they will be your point of contact. There will be local viewing days, training and team selection, before we all meet together on the 17th June for the Challenge!!
If you are not already a British Dressage member, you are still welcome to come along to the viewing days, which essentially are lessons with our regional trainers. If you then get picked to represent your County, you will need to become a member. Teams will be made up of four riders – one Preliminary, one Novice, One Elementary and the fourth member to be either Prelim, Medium, Advanced Medium or PSG level. Teams can be senior, BYRDS and Para riders – in fact we very much hope they will be a mixture of all three! Para riders will also have the option of riding their relevant Para Grade test if they are not able to ride the tests offered.
We are looking for sponsorship for all levels, as we want to keep up the great rosettes and prizes we were able to offer this year!   If you might be able to help, please call Katharine to discuss!  County Coordinators may well be looking for local sponsorship for their teams as well.
Riders will ride in two rounds, and the best three scores from each will be added together to make the total. The team with the best score will win! So, if you are interested in getting involved, contact your County Coordinator (details below) and she will be able to tell you more!

REPORTS OF PAST EVENTS

THE SENIOR INTER REGIONAL COMPETITION 21-22 MAY 2011
THE COLLEGE, KEYSOE, BEDS

Another great weekend at The College has come and gone.  Our six teams all arrived, along with the other 150 riders on Friday evening, and were soon busy bedding down horses, parking boxes, and setting up our "Eastern Camp" consisting of gazebo's, banner and bunting!  After a briefing on the weekend, and hog roast, everyone settled down with a glass of wine to chat to their new teams mates (well, everyone except Shirley who had to go and plait as she was on at 8am the next morning!)
Saturday dawned fine and warm and soon all three arenas were busy with riders.  The warm up area was a hive of activity, with teams all having their trainers there working with them, warming them up and making any last minute tweaks.  We had some great results - starting with the warm up classes where Fraser Murray and Tracey Fall were equal 2nd in the Prelim.  The Novice was definitely our strongest level this year - and the warm  up class proved it with 1st Rachel Roberts, 2nd Sue Maddocks, 4th Rachel Stott, 8th Sue Jones and 10th Liz Warr!  Elementary saw an equal 9th placing for Jessica Williams and Shirley Babb.
Then it was on to the important business of the weekend - the team tests!  All our riders rode brilliantly, and everyone supported everyone else and cheered on team mates.  At the end of the day we had some great results including: Fraser in the lead in the Prelim, with  Angela Fenn in 4th, Jessica 2nd in the Elementary, Sue Jones leading the Novice with Gemma Berry in 3rd, and Louise Clark leading the PSG.  This also meant that our London team was in 1st place, with Beijing and Syndey Teams snapping at their heels - a fantastic result!
Top Chef & Champagne Cocktail Mixer - Tonie Finch!!

Soon the BBQ's were lit and Mark was raising a toast to all our riders before we proceeded to party the night away as is expected at the Inter Regionals - joining up with the Central party later in the evening!
Sunday was wild and windy!  Trees swayed, arena sides fell over and flowers rolled as horses got very excited about it all.  Several poor riders did not even make it through their tests due to the fact that there were so many scary monsters in the bushes that their horses decided not to venture further than A!  There were two pauses in proceedings where all available hands ran into the arenas, putting up markers, stamping surface around them and collecting stray flowerpots.  However, the competition continued, and after lunch, the sun came out and the wind dropped down - so not all bad.  Our riders had mixed fortunes, and those that did well on the first day did not always do so well on the second day.
Finally, after 23 hours of scoring (me!), lots of riding, working in, tears and laughter - the end was in sight, and as is now traditional, all teams gathered in full competition gear in the arena, for photos and flag waving!  We were pleased to have several riders placed in the individual classes as follows:
Prelim Champion:  Fraser Murray - hurrah!  And runner up - Angela Fenn - a great Prelim result!  In the Novice we had Sue Jones 2nd and Gemma Berry 7th.  Elementary saw three top 10 placings - Jessica Williams in 3rd, Shirley Babb 4th and Caroline Steward 7th.  Our Advanced Med/PSG Individuals also did well, both getting placed with Louise Clark 5th and Emma Wakefield 9th.
Then it was on to te all-important team results where we had to relinquish our crown of two years to Wales!  However, we still had three teams in the top 10, which out of 37 teams and 8 regions, was a pretty good result!  So well done to
The London Team - 7th (Carolyn Davis, Sue Jones, Gemma Berry & Angela Coakley)
The Beijing Team - 6th (Jessica Williams, Rachel Roberts,Kate Rowlands & Rosemary Coker) and finally to our highest placed team - big cheer for our
Sydney Team in 6th and consisting of Fraser Murray, Liz Warr, Shirley Babb & Clare Day
So another Inter Regionals over - and all eyes now turn to Wales for the Home International in October.  I would like to thank lots of people as usual - all of the riders for preparing so well and doing us so proud, all the helpers and supporters, the people who helped put up and take down the gazebo, cook food, pour wine and help everyone else.  To Paul for training Saturday, to Tonie, Michele & Mary Ellen who were stars at doing the scoring with me (and see, it isn't fixed - we didn't win!) And most of all to the wonderful Mark Ruddock who worked all weekend warming riders up, listening to their woes and joys, keeping everyone smiling, making the party go, and just continuing to be the Eastern Region's best secret weapon!!

 SPRING CAMP 2011

At the beginning of July, we held our second Spring camp - and what a great weekend it was!  Lots of new 'campers' and the sun shining nearly the whole weekend - perfect!  Friday night started with everyone arriving and getting stabled, followed by a Lecture Demo with Paul and Bobby Hayler on Advanced to Grand Prix.  Paul and Bobby rode their horses and talked about their training methods and aims, as well as answering plenty of questions from the audience who enjoyed sitting in the sun with a glass of wine, watching some lovely horses.  Then it was on to the BBQ being cooked up by Tonie, and into the bar for the rest of the evening.

Saturday was a busy day, with all riders having lessons in the morning with either Paul, Julie Hugo or Mark Ruddock.  As well as riding, they also had two workshops.  Isabel Harker came from Spillers with her weighbridge and ran a workshop on condition Scoring and Weighing of horses.  It proved to be really popular, everyone had a go, discussed the condition of their own horse, got feeding advice and had them weighed - and as well as all this, they also came away with a goody bag!

Meanwhile in the bar, much activity was going on!  A team from the University of Central Lancashire had travelled down to do Rider Analysis Testing.  This consisted of three different 'stations' which riders had to visit and take part in.  The first involved measuring of legs, height, checking posture and hip flexibility - it also included an exercise where you had to sit on the floor, legs straight and lean forward and try and push a bar as far as you could - the back of the legs were supremely unimpressed with this one and shouted loudly!!  They also tested the strength of your grip - a couple of people were scarily strong (must remember never to challenge them to an arm wrestle!)Then it was onto a sensor pad where balance and stretch were measured to see if riders were even on both sides, and put the same amount of weight onto both left and right sides - and all movement was analysed on the computer so that you could see the results after each test.

Finally riders were bobbled up, strapped into a fetching top and sat on the "horse" where various turning and bending exercises took place to test the strength of your core, hips and pelvis.

Mr Hayler shows how it should be done!

After lunch we had test riding, each rider having chosen which level they wanted to ride, and it was good to see some great scores.  Test sheets were collected after evening stables, and riders studied them ready to work on various points the next day in their training session.  We then had a really interesting talk from Michelle Tipper - who, as well as being a freelance International Groom, is also a trained Sports Psychologist.  Shelley started off by asking everyone about their preparation for tests, what things influence their performance and what they could and could not control.  She then gave examples of a couple of methods for getting into the zone.  One was by thinking of positive experiences and touching your knuckle at the same time, and therefore linking good times with this.  The idea being that if you worked on it, you should get to the stage where just touching your knuckle will put you into a positive state of mind.  Another was the circle of success where things go right inside it (a couple of people were heard to ask, did it have to be a circle, or could it be a rectangle ... roughly 20 x 60m?!)  Dinner followed, and then ... for a Saturday night at camp, a very quiet evening!  I think that we had worn everyone out during the day!

Sunday dawned sunny and warm, and riders were soon out in their lessons, working on movements from the tests, and looking for where they could pick up extra marks.  Jonathan Cantry came from NAF to do a workshop on supplements in the modern dressage horse, telling riders about different substances currently on the market, and what they can be used for.  In the afternoon, the test riding was a competition, and everyone looked very smart, plaited and in show gear.  Hayley Liddiard came up and sat with those not riding to discuss the tests and do some practice judging which proved very popular, giving everyone the chance to ask questions and see what the judge sees - it proved very enlightening for some, and c omments such as "um, I never realised they could tell I was doing that, ooh, and that from the judges box!!"  were overheard.

Hayley giving her judging Master Class!!

At the end of the day, everyone gathered in the bar for the results of the weekend.  The Piaffe Team won the stable prize for having the tidiest area over the two days, including neatly rolled lead ropes and swept area outside!  The winners of the respective sections in the test riding were Prelim: Sally "I don't really do dressage" Gladding, Nov: Claire "she's usually wild" Lambert, Elem: Sarah "I did everything Mark told me" Motion, Medium: Sam "it's all under control" Smyth and Adv Med: Jo "taken enough drugs that I can't feel my bad back now" Mason.  There was a presentation to Hilary Carr who is leaving the region and moving up Cheshire where she will be in the North West region - good luck Hilary, and look forward to seeing you at October camp.  And final prize went to the most entertaining combination, which had to be Jodie Smith and Caramel who got a big cheer in their test when they got right canter.... on the ninth try!  Thanks as always to the fab team at Norton Heath who make it such a pleasure to run camp here, for the great food and the 'nothing is too much trouble attitude', to Mark, Paul and Julie for all their teaching, and to Hayley for her judges input.  Also to Vicky and Rachel, both sidelined at the moment, but happy to come and write anyway.  And finally thanks to everyone who took the time to email, text or phone me afterwards to say how much they had enjoyed it - that makes it all worthwhile!

Jodie and Caramel heave a sigh of relief to have reached the end of the test!!!

 SPRING CAMP 2011

We have just finished a very windy weekend at Norton Heath!  The sky remained blue for two days, the sun shone, riders had a brilliant time, but oh, did the wind blow!  Friday night and Saturday morning, fresh from Royal wedding celebrations, 29 ponies and horses with their assorted riders descended on Norton Heath for two days of riding and watching and chatting.  Morning was lessons with either Eleanor Collins or Julie Hugo, and these were soon in full swing.  When not riding, there were stable management lectures, and discussions on feeding your horse with Vicky Boultwood.  Some of the maths when calculating how much their horse should eat according to its body weight was rather suspect - but luckily riders were not being marked on this (although there may be a couple of very fat ponies by next camp!!)
.
In the afternoon, we held test riding, with all levels from Prelim to Advanced Medium catered for.  Everyone rode really well, coping with wind and the class running a bit late, and then it was on to evening stables.  This was followed by a demo with Phillippa Coles on warming up and stretching your horse properly.  It was really interesting, and several riders were seen trying out various moves later on!  Supper was a spread out affair, Mums mostly in the bar with a glass of wine, children in the cafe and outside, eating, drinking and making new friends.  We must have done a good job of wearing everyone out, as by about 9pm - Norton Heath was like a ghost town, with everyone retiring to bed!!
.
Jenny Gates - C Squad Winner             Jemima Upton - Prelim Winner    Angus Rowe - Fledgling Rider Test Winner
Sunday saw riders and ponies up and busy again.  In the morning, besides lessons, there were also practical sessions for everyone to work with Philippa further on the work they had seen the previous evening.  Feedback from these sessions was brilliant, ranging from one small rider telling me that she thought Phillippa was able to do magic - "she just walked in, took one look at my pony and told me exactly what problems I have riding him" the awe struck child told me!  Everyone was very impressed with how quickly their own horse was assessed and correctly diagnosed with areas of tightness or muscles more built up on one side than the other.  To keep everyone busy, they also had to fit the riding of their squad tests into the morning - running from Fledgling up to A squad.
.
. The afternoon test riding on the Sunday was a competition, and riders duly plaited and turned out in full show gear - looking very smart.  John Tyrell took photographs of combinations riding their tests - and these can be seen on his website at: www.bigtimemedia.co.uk.  Hayley Liddiard (List 3 Judge) also came along and sat in the box with everyone talking about the tests and what to look for.  As a Judge, Hayley had lots of really great tips and suggestions for the riders.  It was great to see those who were not too confident being coaxed into saying what they thought of a movement, giving it a mark, and being told they were spot on!!  I think we have several budding judges of the future in our midst!
.
.  Everyone gathered at the end of the weekend for prize giving and summing up, and it was lovely to hear so many people say what a good time they had had!!  In the test riding - the Prelim winner was Jemima Upton, Novice - Natalie Roberts, Elementary - Katrina Hall.  In the Rider tests it was a win in the Fledglings for Angus Rowe, C Squad - Jenny Gates, B squad - Katrina Hall and A Squad Joseph Taylor.  The prize for the most cuddly pony went to Pippa Woodford's lovely grey Eddie.  Judge of the Future Award went to India Sheridan, and the award for the highest %age of the weekend went to Eleanor Hall and Smartie with 80%!!  (Totilas - eat your heart out!).  The final award for the person who joined in, listened and contributed all weekend and generally was a great all-round BYRDS camper went jointly to Georgia Durban and Felicity Cole - both at their first camp (and hopefully coming to many more in the future!)
.
Pippa Woodford's Eddie - winner of cuddliest pony!
All in all, it was a great weekend.  Many thanks as always to Tonie and the team at Norton Heath, who are always so welcoming, with nothing being too much trouble.  It really does make a difference - we got lots of feedback from people who have not been to Norton Heath before saying what a lovely venue and how much they felt relaxed and welcomed!  And also thanks to Lotte Olsen, who took on duel roles of BYRDS Mum and Judge both afternoons, valiantly judging a variety of tests at all levels (sometimes without even a score sheet to write on!)  Cheers Lotte - go straight to List 1!!  Finally, of course, the biggest thanks must go to our fabulous BYRDS Rep Eleanor Collins who does all of this as a volunteer!!  She was there on Friday putting up the gazebo, all day Saturday from dawn til dusk, teaching, chatting, advising, socialising and making sure that everyone had a good time.  In between she judged a few rider tests, sat in and talked about tests, did the tea run and sorted out about three more BYRDS events - so THANK YOU Eleanor - it is a pleasure to work with you!
.
And if you are reading this thinking how much fun it all sounded, then don't forget - we have another camp coming up in October at Keysoe - so get the date in your diary and see you there!!
