British Pony rider Annabella Pidgley (13) made a big impact last week at Compiègne CDIO5*/CDI3*/CDIYJP in France (17 – 20 May 2018) with her two relatively new rides, Cognac IX and Ine, who each posted an emphatic win.

In Friday’s Pony Team Test Annabella rode superbly for a combination personal best score of 73.09% aboard Cognac IX (FS Chambertin x Waldemar) who is a 10-year-old palomino gelding owned by Annabella’s mother, Sarah Pidgley. Making their international debut as a combination, the pair had a clear lead to take the competitive class ahead of runners-up Shanna Baars (16) and Don Camillo Du Bois for the Netherlands. Annabella likewise scored 70.476% to take fourth place partnered by Ine (pictured at Keysoe), an 11-year-old Constantin-sired chestnut mare who is also owned by Sarah.

In the Pony Individual the stablemates switched positions, Ine taking the honours with a score of 73.19% with Cognac close behind on 72.568% for second. Rounding off a prolific weekend for Windsor-based Annabella, she then rode with great style in yesterday’s Pony Freestyle for 75.16% with Ine, taking second to the Netherlands’ Evi Van Rooij and King Stayerhof’s Jango the Dutch pair having the edge with 75.54%.

Compiègne played host also to the second leg of the 2018 FEI Nations Cup™ Dressage season. Britain’s team of four, initially faced with the disappointment of Becky Moody having to withdraw Carinsio from the competition, went on to produce some good results. A rider to particularly stand out was Gareth Hughes and the beautiful mare Classic Briolinca (Trento B x Royal Dance). Briolinca who was so successful at Keysoe CDI earlier this year was fourth in the CDIO Grand Prix with an international PB of 72.37% and third in the CDIO Freestyle with another PB of 76.82% to sit behind Scandinavian dressage stars Cathrine Dufour and Patrik Kittel.

Gareth’s compatriots also fared well. Hayley Watson-Greaves and Rubins Nite were awarded 70.69% for an assured performance in the CDIO Grand Prix whilst Henriette Andersen and the gorgeous Flavio achieved a good score of 68.43%. The British ladies went on to take seventh and twelfth respectively in the CDIO Grand Prix Special to secure a team ranking of fourth for Great Britain.

In the CDI3*, Dutch riders Hans Peter Minderhoud and Adelinde Cornelissen may have dominated but a young British combination made an impression showing great potential for the future. Carl Hester pupil Sonnar Murray-Brown and his lovely 11-year-old Erlentanz (by Latimer) built on a Grand Prix score of 66.76% with some costly green errors to a Freestyle score of 72.69% for third.

"[I'm] Really pleased with Erlentanz at Compiègne CDI, he tried his heart out for me," said Sonnar on Facebook. "We scored 66.761% with some expensive green mistakes in the Grand Prix. We then went on to finish third in the freestyle on 72.690%, we have had a great time and [I'm] so pleased with the start of our international journey together!"

Another combination to grow throughout the competition was British Young Rider Amber Barton with the stallion Labiat. Amber (21) and ‘Leo’ who is a good-looking 14-year-old son of Le Primeur took eighth in the Young Rider Team with a pleasing score of 67.59% before earning a podium place for their Freestyle which earned them 71.93% for third.
