Best of the North West at the Regionals

Although there was an air of celebration following the amazing events at Greenwich only the day before, it was back to business for the top horse and rider combinations from the North West Region: Somerford Park in Cheshire was the scene of a busy two days as the Regional Championships took place on 10 and 11 August.

Over 260 tests were ridden across the two days, as 34 qualification places were filled for the Espayo National Dressage Championships in September. Three of those places were taken by the on-form Michael Eilberg who won the Dressage International Inter I with Woodlander Dornroeschen, mother of Young Horse World Champion Farouche. He also won the Suregrow Advanced Medium Open with the upcoming Half Moon Dynasty on a score of 73.86%, and secured qualification for Alison Reddy’s Furst Sinclair in the Dressage Deluxe Medium Open with second place. The pair lost out on first place by just 0.09% to Darcas Lever and Valentijn WG who won the class with 70.63%.

Charlie Hutton also had a successful trip to Somerford, as he won the Winergy Prix St Georges with the 12-year-old Krack C gelding Blue Chip Titanic. He also secured qualification to the Nationals with a second place in the Suregrow Advanced Medium Open with his own Don Dino, who only progressed up to Advanced Medium in May this year.

Patsy Bartram took first and joint-second place in the Stretch & Flex Elementary Open. She rode Ziezo D, an 8-year-old Painted Black gelding to take the top spot and Patsy's own Abelia shared second place with Calum Whitworth and Sirius Black III on a score of 71.25%. Calum then went on to take first place in the Dressage Deluxe Medium Restricted with Vanessa Knight’s Balistro 4 with 70.72%.

Jane Critchley and her own Donnerouge won the Suregrow Advanced Medium Restricted in a close call with Mark Walters and Iceblue Valentino. Jane and Donnerouge just edged it, scoring 67.98%, with Mark only 0.37% behind. Both combinations have qualified for Stoneleigh. In the Stretch & Flex Elementary Restricted, Georgie Wheeler and her Donninger gelding Don Camillio II took first place with 71.88%. They also qualified at Novice level with a fourth place in the Open class.

There was plenty of competition in the Dodson & Horrell Novice classes, as over 85 combinations vied for qualification. In the Open class, Lindsey McDonald and her own Zivago XL took first place with 72.41%. In the Novice Restricted, the class was divided in two to accommodate the large numbers of competitors. Amy Dixon and the diminutive Kennedy mare Maid in Holland won one section and Deniqua Westwood and her own five-year-old Dimmaggio gelding, Rummaggio won the other with a score of 71.15%.

The Centaur Position Perfect Preliminary was another class requiring two sections to allow for all the entries. Heather Hopkinson and Promises Kept took one of the classes with 69.55%. Terry Oughton and Carbon Copy II took the other with a score of 72.42%.
