Final Nationals places decided at Keysoe

The concluding Regional Championship of the summer season took place at Keysoe last week (14-15 August), as competitors took the final opportunity to qualify for the Espayo National Dressage Championships in September.

Pammy and Pippa Hutton took the top two classes, both of which were closely contested. Pammy won the Dressage International Inter I on Belmondo III, her 11-year-old Danish gelding by Bernstein. They posted a sound score of 70.88%, securing the top spot by a margin of just 0.70%, and will return to the Nationals for the second consecutive year.

Daughter Pippa also fared well, winning the Winergy Prix St Georges in a close battle against fellow young rider Alex Hardwick. Pippa, riding the eye-catching Dimmagio mare Duela, scored 70.66%, just 0.27% ahead of Alex. It showed that Duela is back to form after an injury that ruled her out of the Young Rider European Championships in July.

The long trip to Keysoe paid off for Sheffield-based Becky Moody as she won the Suregrow Fertilizer Advanced Medium Open with the highest score of the competition. Riding the seven-year-old Westphalian Don Angelo, Becky posted a score of 75.44%, with a clear 5% margin over the rest of the placed riders. In the Restricted class, Victoria Glasow secured another regional place on top of the one she had already earned at the Northern Regionals. This time she rode her own Werlindo gelding Wilumait in to top spot.

In the Dressage Deluxe Medium, Paul Hayler and FJ Adonis were the winners of the Open class with a score of 70.72%. In the Restricted, Antonia Brown and her own Democraat-sired Dutch gelding, S.O.S. Wow were the winners in another very tight class where the top five all finished within 0.90% of each other.

Daniel Greenwood had a very successful visit to Keysoe, qualifying three horses for the Nationals. His best score came in the Stretch & Flex Elementary Open, with Val Rubilah. They finished on a score of 73.33%, winning by a good margin. In the Restricted class, Hannah Bates and Essentially M&S continued their recent good form to win the class and a place at Stoneleigh.

The Dodson & Horrell Novice Open was dominated by young horses, with all four qualifiers aged six or under. Jessica Thompson and Danilo II posted a great score of 75.06% to come out on top. Danilo II, owned by Susan Phillips, is a five-year-old by Don Frederico and only began her competitive career in March.

Daisy Coakley took first place in two classes: the Dodson & Horell Novice Restricted and the Centaur Position Perfect Preliminary. She rode Cleopatra II, a Dutch mare by Dyano and scored over 71% in both classes. The other Novice Restricted class was very tight, as the top four finished within 0.92% of each other. 14-year-old Imogen Ablett and River Valley Amadeus came out winners with 67.93%, and they will make the trip to the Nationals in September. Corinne Roberts and the British-bred mare Furst Edition were the winners of the other Centaur Position Perfect Preliminary class on a score of 68.64%.
