Winter regionals: Houghton Hall

International rider Nikki Crisp enjoyed another high scoring regional outing which she summed up as “a good day at the office”, adding a further three championship tickets to her Bishop Burton success in February where she claimed the Albion Medium Open title with Viv Gleave’s Durable (by Speilberg).

At Houghton Hall, the 17.2hh eight-year-old KWPN stallion danced his way to the top once again with a winning compilation by Ros Kay Freestyle Dressage Design, to claim the Spillers Medium Open Music Freestyle on 75.94%

Nikki was also a close runner up with her own 10-year-old 18hh gelding Beau De La Bryere (by Up To Date) to qualify in a hot Albion Medium Open, just behind Laura Woollen and Woodlander Buddy Holly, before going on to win the Nupafeed Advanced Medium Music Freestyle with Anne King’s 10-year-old Westphalian gelding Forever Young (by Flovino) on 77.28%.

Paul Friday’s team were also on winning form with 21-year-old rider/groom Lucy Pye posting the highest score of the show, winning the PDS Saddles Elementary Restricted Freestyle with Mike Kelly’s eight-year-old British-bred mare Frumma (by Richel Shagen) on 78.85%. Lucy has now qualified Frumma (pictured), as well as her own horse Fiderlight, in all four regional classes entered.

“Frumma is just my kind of horse – fun, quite hot, sensitive to the aids with super paces and trainability – I look forward to riding her every day,” said Lucy, who is enjoying her first season competing Frumma, previously ridden by her partner Jezz Palmer.

“It took a while for us to gel and understand each other, but both Paul and Jezz have been great in helping me get to know her – we had a real turning point over Christmas and we’ve got a good partnership now.”

Lucy, a former working pupil with Anna Ross Davies, enjoyed a personal best with Frumma in the freestyle, scoring 9s for the walk and 7s and 8s for the simple changes, in spite of “a slight blip” when she missed the beginning of the change from walk to the canter music and had to make up for it by taking a gamble and riding her canter more forward to catch up.

“We did the arena walk in the morning and Frumma warmed up well and felt quite relaxed and focussed, although she did have a little spook at the photographer before we went up the centre line,” said Lucy, who rode to an instrumental classical theme, put together by Equivisions. “In the arena she felt really onside and with me, but I didn’t expect such a high score because of our mistake, so I was delighted when I saw our mark and very excited at the prospect of going to Hartpury.”

Paul Friday will also travel to Hartpury having qualified for the Nupafeed Freestyle Advanced Medium with Roman Noir Himself, alongside Jezz Palmer and Zanthoos Himself, who will also contest the Baileys Horse Feeds Freestyle Novice Open with Exito.

Fifteen-year-old Mollie Sears from Saffron Walden, Essex, a keen BYRDS Eastern team member, made her regional debut winning the huge 40-strong KBIS prelim championships.

Riding her mother Amanda’s eight-year-old 17.2hh KWPN gelding Dimna (by Uphill), who they found advertised in the classified section of the BD website in March last year, this combination impressed scoring 75.71% .

“We spent months looking for the right kind of horse for Mollie last year and travelled all over England, as well as Germany and Holland without any luck before we spotted Dimna’s advert which sounded very promising. Mollie fell in love with her straight away and they seemed to gel immediately - we also loved the fact that she has a prophet’s thumbprint on her chest which we took as a lucky omen,” said Amanda, who enjoys accompanying her daughter to competitions and regular training sessions with Eastern BYRDS rep Eleanor Collins and Alex Hardwick. “Dimna can be quite sharp but it never turns into anything – he’s a cheeky, affectionate elegant horse with striking paces and a very good hind leg – Mollie adores him and has high hopes for him. We’re all looking forward to competing at Hartpury and aiming to enjoy the experience.”

The Shadow Horse Elementary Restricted regional title went to 28-year-old Cara Sweeney and her seven-year-old Oldenburg mare Belissima (by Belissimo), who will travel to Hartpury with Cara’s eight-year-old Hanoverian mare A Beautiful Life, who has already qualified for the same elementary restricted championships at Addington last month.

Congratulation and good luck to everyone heading for Hartpury – BD look forward to seeing you there!
