Senior Inter Regional: Eastern rules once again

The Eastern region reigned supreme once more at this year’s annual Senior Inter Regional competition (14 – 15 May 2016), claiming the title for the second year in a row.

In a weekend filled with fun, team spirit and regional pride, teams from across the country and their eight Regional Development Officers travelled to Keysoe, Bedfordshire to battle it out for the coveted Senior Inter Regional cup across levels ranging from Prelim to PSG.

The winning team was decided from the combined placings for all competitors within a team. First place scored one point, second place scored two points and so on; lowest score wins. With an unbelievably low score of 20.49, it was Eastern Grey Goose (pictured with Eastern Regional Chair, Lotte Olsen) who lifted the trophy and celebrated the win.

Eastern Grey Goose – comprised of Jody Green with Aghed George, Sue Maddocks on Fifth Edition, Louise Talbot riding Aatto and Jodie Smith with Cinja – lead the pack from start and, with all four members placing no lower than fourth after the two days of competition, they smashed their 2015 score of 39.18.

“We are the champions again!” exclaimed an ecstatic Katharine Perry, the Eastern Regional Development Officer. “Our winning Grey Goose team was made up of two new team members - Jody Green and Louise Talbot, who were both brilliant additions to the squad. They were joined by old hands Sue Maddocks and Jodie Smith. Sue rode her new horse Fiver to great success, leading the Novice on the first day and Jodie, our team mascot and member of last year’s winning team, kept her great record going on pocket rocket Cinja.

“The Eastern region had a great weekend at Keysoe,” continued Katharine. “There was a mix of riders who had been on teams before and quite a few newbies – it was a lovely mix, everyone got to know each other, help out, cheer on, call and encourage everyone else!

“We had parties both nights, and team tactics were discussed over BBQ and prosecco! On Saturday evening, [Eastern team trainer] Mark Ruddock and [Eastern rider rep] Hayley Liddiard took all our team members into the arenas for a ‘course walk’, going through all the movements on foot.  It certainly worked as there were some very accurate tests next day, and not a single 15m circle too big or too small!

“We’re so proud of all five of our teams. Every test saw a sea of pale blue on the veranda supporting, and even the team dogs were dressed in Eastern kit! Keysoe put on a fabulous show, the arenas looked perfect, the two indoor schools gave so much room to warm up, and all tests were live streamed so that even if you were not there, you could keep up with the action. Thank you to everyone who came and supported and rode and trained and helped us to our success - a great weekend for all, and retaining our title was the icing on the cake!”

Individually-speaking, the competition also witnessed some fabulous tests and scores from competing combinations. Welsh pair, Laura Fisher and her own 14-year-old Belgian gelding, Sam the Man Veldhoek claimed the highest mark on both days in the Elementary with scores of 72.94% and 72.05%.

It was Southern’s Tania Grantham who took the top spot in the Advanced Medium and PSG combined class. Riding Edwina Grantham’s ten-year-old Samarant-sired gelding Samarino, she scored impressive marks on both days of 68.24% and 68.22%.
