Summer Regional Championships: The Cabin

Whilst the Olympic Games celebrated its opening weekend, British Dressage celebrated up-and-coming combinations – and perhaps future Olympians – with The Cabin’s Summer Regional Championships in Scotland (5 – 7 August 2016).

Aberdeenshire’s Victoria Gladwyn had a very successful competition, qualifying for the LeMieux National Championships for the first time in her dressage career. Aboard her own and mum, Cecilia Gladwyn’s six-year-old Stedinger gelding, Sonnersted, Victoria rode to victory in the Dodson & Horrell Novice Gold, impressively scoring a personal best of 73.27%. Competing together for just over 12 months, the pair has formed a great partnership and, not content with just one Regional title, also claimed the Childéric Saddles Elementary Silver with another solid score of 72.08%.

Fresh from the Junior and Young Rider European Championships, 20-year-old Robyn Smith booked her place for the Nationals with her own eight-year-old Florencio-sired stallion, Francesco 77. Placing eighth in last year’s Elementary Open National Championship, the pair look to be strong contenders again in the TopSpec Medium Gold Finals, scoring 71.87% at the Scottish Regional to top the leader board and claim the qualification. The duo completed their weekend with a score of 68.25% in the Equine Construction Advanced Medium Gold, placing third. The class was topped by West Lothian’s Jo Barry, with her own 14-year-old son of Rilke, Vivaldi V. Gaining the competition’s highest mark with 74.12%, adding another win to their tally of big achievements in a partnership that spans over ten years. After a three-year break from competition, Vivaldi appears to be back with a bang and will be a force to be reckoned with in September at the Nationals in Stoneleigh, Warwickshire.

Speaking from her Facebook, Jo exclaimed: “Wow, thought last year at the Regionals was a fairy tale, but this year beats it hands down…Vivaldi returned! 74.12% in the Advanced Medium Gold. [Three years] since he last competed at Stoneleigh but we are heading on that path again.”

Joining British Dressage last year and placing 27th at this year’s KBIS Prelim Winter Regional Championships, 26-year-old Jennifer Atherton’s win at The Cabin shows her continuous improvement and how she’s gained ground in less than 12 months. Riding her own nine-year-old British-bred gelding, Daized N Amused, Jennifer claimed the BackinAction Prelim Silver Regional title with a score of 67.98%.
