BD Winter Regionals: Addington Manor

The ever-popular Addington Winter Regionals took place last week and featured large classes, testing weather conditions and many great tests (22 – 26 February 2017).

Starring in the Magic Prix St Georges Music Freestyle was 19-year-old Joanna Thurman Baker with her faithful partner Highcliffe Apollo (pictured). The pair scored 72.08% to finish ahead of Nathalie Kayal with DHI Bravo and Bryony Goodwin with Hawtins Floriana completing the podium.

A member of the World Class Programme, Joanna’s no stranger to a big occasion having competed at last year’s European Championships for Young Riders in Oliva Nova, Spain. Speaking to British Dressage about her test Joanna said, "Apollo felt so happy and confident in the test, he loves doing freestyles and I can tell he is listening to the music. My music was made by Thomas Farnon and everyone loves it, it's really upbeat and suits Apollo really well. He's feeling better than ever thanks to the support of the World Class programme and I'm really excited about the season ahead with him!" Joanna trains with Carl Hester and her mother Diane at their lovely Chiltern base Turville Valley Stud.

Another Under-25s rider to excel was Bobby Hayler who took the win in the Spillers Medium Gold Music Freestyle with F J Waleria. The elegant combination was awarded 71.33% from judges John Robinson, Anne Keen and Nikki Herbert. Bobby also placed fourth in the Charles Owen Advanced Medium Gold with Woodlander Forever Amadeus who scored 70.39%. Bobby who has recently returned from the trip of a lifetime to Cambodia and Thailand is now heading to Germany to train and compete. Speaking about the Regionals Bobby said, “I’m very proud of both of my horses especially being back in the saddle for just three days and with Waleria pulling out a lovely ride to win the Medium music. Both Waleria and Ammo are coming to Germany with me, so it is an exciting time ahead.”

The highest score of the show went to Craig Millard with Rubatino ML who earned 75.93% for their performance in the Baileys Horse Feeds Novice Silver Music Freestyle. Rubatino ML is owned and bred by Suzanne Groundwell and her mother; Suzanne supports from afar as she is now based in Victoria, Australia.

Emerging as the highest scorers in a non-freestyle class were Kate Smith and her Dimaggio gelding De le Veiga. Kate and ‘Joey’ won the Charles Owen Advanced Medium Gold with an impressive 75.92% to finish over three percent ahead of the field. Kate, from Alton in Hampshire, trains with Carl Hester.

Turning heads in the Silver classes was the appropriately named Woodlander Sir Gorgeous who won the Blue Chip Novice Silver piloted by Charlotte Drakeley. The pair stood out in a class of over 40 entries to win with a score of 72.14%. Owned by Claire Wyatt of Bromson Stud and bred by Lynne Crowden of Woodlander Stud, ‘Riley’ is a five-year-old SPSS licensed pony stallion by Woodlander Santana; the striking dark bay has had much success already having been Reserve Champion Four Year Old Young Pony in 2016.

British Dressage thanks Addington Manor EC and all involved for yet another successful Regional Championships. Congratulations to all qualified combinations and to everyone who took part.
