Paras power to British victory at Hartpury CPEDI

British para riders dominated the CPEDI classes at the Hartpury Festival of Dressage in Gloucestershire (5 – 9 July 2017).

The brand new combination of Julie Payne and Athene Lindebjerg (pictured) enjoyed a successful international debut winning all three Grade I tests in convincing style. The pair has so far competed just a handful of times, in national competitions, and they remain unbeaten.

Di Redfern’s 10-year-old Gribaldi x Diamant mare is no stranger to the big time having won triple gold medals in Rio with Sophie Christiansen. However forming a new partnership provides another challenge, which Athene and her new rider have risen to amazingly well. Julie, who has Multiple System Atrophy which she says is ‘like having multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease, Parkinson’s and chronic fatigue syndrome all in one’, also posted the highest score across all grades in the Team and Individual tests.

“It’s such an honour to ride her – she’s the kindest horse,” says Julie. “We are a very new partnership but I feel we are beginning to cement that partnership, and she got better and better this week.”

Having won the Grade V Team Test, Sophie Wells continued her fine form with a win in the Individual on her own C Fatal Attraction; she posted a huge score of 73.952% which left her almost 7% clear of Charlotte Cundall and KBIS Starchaser. Spain’s Olga Jorda Brase took third place with Luna CCL, just under 2.6% behind Charlotte after scoring 64.643%. Successful Paralympian Sophie, who was a team and individual gold medallist in Rio, said; “I was delighted with my test, I felt I rode much stronger today so I’m really pleased with the result.”

Also continuing her winning form was Izzy Palmer, who again claimed top spot with 71.19% in the Grade IV Individual. This time her two rides, Pinnochio and Touchdown, were separated by fellow British rider Nicky Greenhill who was less than 0.2% behind in second riding Gregorian Chant.

There was a fantastic one-two for Suzanna Hext who again claimed victory with the Hutton’s Abira in the Grade III Individual, beating her own score of 70.73% on LJT Engaards Solitaire to win on 73.412%. Suzanna was a successful event rider before a life-changing accident caused her career to take a different path. Erin Orford claimed third place with Nirvana Morroko, less than 1% behind on a final score of 69.794%.

Natasha Adkinson added a valuable score of 73% to the team total when topping the Grade II competition with Yvonne Bennett’s Sweet Caledonia. Meanwhile Georgia Wilson had a fast turnaround, with less than an hour between her two rides, but made it count as she finished second with Chico III (68.088%) and third with Lordanos Lover (67.647%).

In the team competition Great Britain, consisting of Sophie Wells, Erin Orford, Natasha Adkinson and Julie Payne, took a commanding victory as they finished fifty five points clear of nearest rivals Ireland. A strong team from Spain finished third while the popular riders from Hong Kong came fourth.

Freestyle Friday
The para riders filled Hartpury’s indoor arena with iconic sounds, from classical music to film songs and even the Great British Bake Off’s theme tune!

The Grade III class started the day in which inspiring Suzanna Hext claimed another win at the Festival on Abira with 72.45%. Second place was a close run contest in which Erin Orford and Nirvana Morroko came out on top with 70.546% ahead of Amanda Shirtcliffe and New Princess with 70.203%.

Julie Payne continued her great form notching up another win taking the Grade I with 75.300 on Athene Lindebjerg. Mari Durward-Akhurst and Sky O’Hara brought home the silver spot on 71.820% and third was filled by Dianne Green and Gunstones Pride.

Natasha Adkinson earned some impressive 80% plus artistic marks in the Grade II, storming in on 77.633% and taking the class with Sweet Caledonia. Georgia Wilson riding Chico III took second spot with 72.600 whilst Lorna Lee and Midnight completed the top three on 56.967%.

Natasha said: “I have had a lot of time off this year with health issues so it’s lovely to be here. I was very nervous on the first day but my wonderful horse Caly, who I have owned since she was six months old, supported me all the way. Today, Caly loved the music and felt on top form, I am so proud of her, a great come back!”

The Grade IV was another very closely run contest with less than 1% between the top three scores. Nicky Greenhill riding Gregorian Chant managed to just slip ahead of the rest of the field and claim first with 73.225%. Angela Peavy claimed second place for the USA aboard Royal Dark Chocolate on 72.425% and Izzy Palmer and Pinnochio was close on her heels with 72.275% for third.

C Fatal Attraction was flying high under Sophie Well’s artful direction to claim the Grade V class on a huge score of 80.550% with 12% in hand over the rest of the class. Charlotte Cundall and KBIS Starchaser added another placing of second on 68.310% while the last to go of this year’s para competition, Alejandro Nande Inglesias, took home third on 66.600%.
