England football captain joins BDSC party revellers
The captain of England and Chelsea Football Club John Terry (pictured centre) was the unexpected star of the British Dressage Supporter Club’s (BDSC) annual fundraising ball at the SAS Radisson Portman Hotel in London, 24 January 2009.
A guest of Oldencraig Equestrian Centre owner Ian Winfield, Terry generously provided two signed Chelsea football shirts for the auction, raising £1,000 each. The injured football star also offered to take the successful bidders, John Griffin and Spencer McCarthy, to a Chelsea match and spent much time signing autographs and having photos taken with some of the 360 party-goers.
About £3,600 was raised through the auction and just under £3,000 from the raffle and games, making it one of the most successful fundraising events to date.
BDSC chairman Penny Smith said: “It was a good turnout and fantastic to have such a celebrity joining us, thanks to Ian, who is a great supporter of our club.”
During the AGM, which took place earlier in the day, it was announced that the committee is in negotation with British Dressage to share a marquee at the 2009 Windsor European Championships, 25-30 August. The BDSC is also planning to have stands at the national championships, 17-20 September, and Hickstead international, 20-26 July.
The BDSC is looking for new members to join its committee. Anyone interested should contact Penny Smith.
