2009 Scottish Winter Final: Youngest rider scores top marks
The youngest competitor at the Scottish Winter Final, held at Rowallan Activity Centre, Ayrshire, 27 February to 1 March, not only won three classes, but also scored the highest percentage of the show.
Carmen Gammie, who is just 12 years old, won the prelim, novice restricted and novice restricted freestyle, the latter with 75.46%. She rode Champagne Bubbles, a seven-year-old 14hh Welsh Sec D gelding, which was her birthday present last November.
In the same month, Carmen, who is trained by Mary McFarlane and lives in Aberdeen, qualified for the winters at her first outing, Gordon EC.
Mum Elizabeth said: “Bubbles is just the sweetest, most genuine pony. Carmen was slightly nervous in the prelim test and performed a ‘safe’ test, she rode a lot better in the novice, but made a couple of mistakes. In the freestyle, they were the best I’ve ever seen them go and the pony really rose to the occasion. To win all three titles was way beyond our expectations - just ridiculous.”
