Festival Focus - Beacons Equestrian 21
The second of the welsh festivals in May, Beacons Equestrian (22 – 24 May) meant it was the last opportunity for qualified riders to gain a place at the Petplan Equine Winter Area Festival Championships in a few weeks. A few ‘famous’ names were in attendance…
Petplan’s Picks!
For all the Harry Potter fans, Josie Kent won the Intermediate I on Serious Black, a sixteen-year-old, who stepped up to this level late last year in 2020 with a result of 70.46%. This will be their second time at the Championships after placing first in the Advanced Medium in 2020. Josie, a University student, who has ridden Serious for six years says that “We work on keeping him supple and enjoying his work with plenty of hacking and pole work. He’s cheeky but you have to make friends with him before he’ll trust you but then he’s lovely.”
Previous Quest rider and winner of the Winter Championship Prelim Bronze in 2018, Amy Daye, has come back after a quiet few years to gain qualification in the Novice Bronze with 70.42% on Prince William MBS. The ten-year-old, who came to Amy at three months old, suffers with allergies and hypersensitivity which has resulted in sinusitis, affecting his lungs. “We’ve scraped together every penny to keep him fit and competing,” says Amy.
There was nothing spooky about Casper VII result, winning the Prix St Georges Bronze class with 67.37%. Rider Judith Helen Johnson started her career in dressage thirteen years ago but has competed Casper VII for nine years, working towards their current level in 2019. Also winning the Elementary Silver on her other horse, Ice with 70.44%, a newer ride for Judith, who stepped up to Medium level in 2020.
