British Dressage Horse Care

Improve your knowledge, skills and horse care with our brand new British Dressage Horse Care course

Handling BF3U1396

The British Dressage Horse Care programme is designed to help you as a rider learn all of the fundamentals in caring for horses. The new course is a mixture of online and practical learning modules, which aims to boost the care skills of our BD Youth members and beyond!

What is BD Horse Care?

Horse Care focuses on improving skills in four key areas:

  • Nutrition
  • Grooming
  • Wellbeing
  • Tack and dress

There will be five tiers in total, starting at the Introductory Horse Care Certificate, progressing through to the Advanced Horse Care Certificate, and these will be linked to the BD Youth squadding levels, as following:

Introductory Horse Care Certificate (Tier 1) D Squad

Preliminary Horse Care Certificate (Tier 2) C Squad

Novice Horse Care Certificate (Tier 3) C+ Squad

Intermediate Horse Care Certificate (Tier 4) B/B+ Squad Coming in 2022!
Advanced Horse Care Certificate (Tier 5) A/A Young Horse Squad Coming in 2022!

Everyone must start at the introductory certificate – you can then work your way up to the relevant level, depending on your squad. If you already hold a certificate in Horse Care (such as the Pony Club or BHS exams), please contact your Development Officer, or Hannah James, Youth Development Officer (contact details below), with evidence of what you've completed, and they will be able to advise you on which level to start at.

Completing the modules

Each tier has an online learning section to it, which can be completed through our online learning platform, as well as a practical assessment. Practical assessments will be arranged through your region, from 2022.
