An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the BD Board as an Extra Director, with specific responsibility for providing advice and guidance on HR, legal and governance matters.

This is a non-executive position, which will be a co-opted appointment for an initial term of four years, to provide independent oversight and input into our human resources, legal and governance frameworks.  The HR / Legal Director will attend meetings of the BD Board of Directors, as well as the Finance & Business Development Committee, working closely with the Chair, Deputy Chair and Chief Executive of British Dressage to ensure effective governance of the organisation.

In accordance with the Articles of Association, the BD Board can co-opt up to five Directors as Extra Directors to provide additional business expertise or professional competencies in specific areas that fall outside the scope of the six member-elected Technical Director portfolios.  This includes the roles of Finance Director and Business Development Director.  The HR / Legal Director would be the third co-opted Extra Director appointment to the Board.

This role is undertaken on a voluntary basis, to help provide leadership and strategic direction to the Board and senior management team of British Dressage. There will also be the opportunity to chair working groups to help plan and develop the organisation’s activities on specific projects, as required. We therefore welcome applications from suitably qualified candidates that have previous relevant experience gained from similar roles in a professional capacity.

As an Independent Non-Executive Director, we are looking for someone who has a proven track record of delivering success, with demonstrable knowledge, skills, and experience in one or more of the following specialist areas:

  • Human Resources
  • Employment law
  • Charitable regulations
  • Staff recruitment and retention
  • Volunteer management
  • Corporate governance

A passion for sport is considered essential for this position, while an active interest in equestrianism would be advantageous.  Recent experience of serving as a Board Director, Trustee, or Committee member in the commercial voluntary, or public sector would also be preferable.

Interviews will take place in early November 2022.
