British Dressage is pleased to recognise the achievement of long-standing judge Andrea Smith, who has been promoted to FEI 3* status.
Yorkshire-based Andrea, who has dedicated over 25 years to judging within British Dressage, successfully joined an elite group of British-based FEI judges following an intensive three-day course at the CDI3* Ornago. Andrea met with a select group of 15 officials from across 12 nations to complete the course in Italy, earning her FEI status.
Andrea’s pathway to qualification began several years ago after being nominated as an FEI candidate judge by British Dressage. While some elements of the programme were completed domestically, the majority required extensive travel across Europe. This included shadow judging at top-level international fixtures, working alongside 5* judges, and undertaking detailed evaluations of performance and decision-making.
The assessment process comprised a written examination focused on dressage rules and judging theory, followed by practical shadow judging sessions. Candidates also took part in formal interviews with course directors Katrina Wüst and Hans-Christian Matthiesen. The seminar was organised with the help and support of the Italian equestrian federation and Italian judge Barbara Ardu.
Alongside her judging career, Andrea is a BHS-qualified coach and has played a key role in developing future officials, mentoring aspiring judges for more than 15 years. She’s also played her part in the selection of British Youth teams as well, taking up the role of Junior and Young Rider selector for an appreciated stint in 2024.
Reflecting on her achievement, Andrea described the promotion as a significant personal milestone, recognising both her long-term commitment to the sport and her contribution to the development of judging standards within British Dressage.
Speaking about the experience, she commented: “The three-day exam in Ornago Italy was intense but our course directors made it such a positive learning experience and I thoroughly enjoyed the team spirit with my many other colleagues from around the world.
I was delighted to pass to 2/3* level; this has been a long-held ambition of mine. Though I have coached and ridden myself to National Championship level several times, judging and tutoring judges is my real passion.
I hope my success to FEI level will inspire others coming through the British Dressage judging system to work hard and "be the best they can be".
In the future I would like to embrace any opportunities to travel more and further build my knowledge to help the judges within British Dressage.”
On the behalf of the BD Board and team, our congratulations go to Andrea on earning this great achievement.
