Combinations new and old shone at Hartpury, as British youth riders stepped forward to compete at the first domestic international of the season (29 March – 3 April).
Isla Sully and Vagabond de Massa (Rieto x Xaquiro) are no strangers to success and returned to the international arena in winning style at Hartpury, claiming a hat-trick of wins at Junior level. Demonstrating consistency and maturity across all three tests, Isla (pictured above) topped the Team competition with 71.768% before going on to secure the Individual class on 69.167%. She then sealed her dominance in style in the Freestyle, producing a polished and expressive performance to music that earned a leading score of 77.283% in front of Clive Halsall (GBR), Mary Robins (NZL) and Marietta Almasy (FRA).
Elsewhere in the Junior placings, new combination Ella-Grace Dovey and Harriet Williams’ Creto (Conteur x Falkenstern II) earned a duo of second placings, including earning 73.059% in the Freestyle where fellow new team Oriana McNamara and Active Solaris placed third.
In the Children on Horses division, Isabelle Stuart (11) dominated all three classes with her consistent partner Prince May The First. The pair topped the Preliminary B with 67.018% before going on to secure victory in both the Team (68.550%) and Individual (68.644%) tests.
The Pony classes were fiercely competitive, particularly in the Team test where Queenie Moule and her own British-bred Amden Supreme Golden Dancer narrowly claimed victory with 70.714%, just a whisker ahead of Martha Jones riding Lily Cawley's 18-year-old Cognac IX on 70.476%. However, Martha turned the tables in the Individual and Freestyle classes, producing standout tests to win with 72.027% and an impressive 77.392%. The Freestyle class proved a real Easter holiday highlight, with Violet Hawkins and DZL Royal Sunrise taking second on 74.434%, while Georgie Morgan completed the top three with Brouwershaven’s Jasper.
The Young Rider classes also saw a strong battle between leading British combinations. Demi Howard-Cartwright and Newton Astro Nascente (Apache x Don Schufro) have recently stepped up to Young Rider level and claimed the Team win with 69.118%, while new combination Ruby Hughes and Mount St John Jazz Dance rose to the top in the Individual class with 70.294%. The Young Rider Freestyle brought a change in the leaderboard, as Myles Graham and new ride Fred Astaire WD - owned by Lindsey Roberts - delivered a winning performance scoring 74.725%, underlining the depth of talent in this section.
In the Under 25 division, 2025 European team medallists Lilah Gibbs and Dude III led the Intermediate II with 68.578%, while Sophie Taylor and Jerrydale (Everdale x Havidoff) took the top honours in the 16-25 Grand Prix on 68.248%. The Freestyle saw Lilah and Dude return to the top of the podium with a winning score of 72.625%, ahead of Georgina Nicholls, rounding off a highly closely fought division.
Thanks go to the organisers at Hartpury College for delivering a superbly run event, and congratulations to all youth riders and connections for their hard work and excellent performances throughout the competition.
