Lewis Carrier led a successful British visit to Belgium, earning a fantastic Freestyle win, whilst five riders earned top ten placings at a competitive show to launch the spring CDI circuit.

2024 LeMieux National Champion Lewis Carrier returned to the international arena with his trusty partner Diego V, collecting a win in the CDI 3* Grand Prix Freestyle on an impressive mark of 76.080%. In front of Olivier Smeets (BEL), Patricia Wolters (NED), Christine Prip (DEN), Juan Carlos Campos (ESP) and Frederico Pinteus (POR) Lewis rode to a programme created by Tony Hobden of Equidance, earning four artistic marks over the 80% barrier and plenty of technical highlights - with great points for tempi changes, piaffe and passage. Lewis opened his show with a solid 68.152% in the 3* Grand Prix, placing 12th in a strong class.

A rightfully proud Lewis took to social media to praise his super horse and reflect on the win: “Diego - running out of words to describe how much of a legend he really is. So proud of the performance he gave last night to secure the win by 3%. A much better balance of energy and concentration which allowed for super work.

This result means a lot. It’s the confidence boost we needed and have worked really hard for over the winter. Last year was mentally tough, but this year was about doing it for ourselves and enjoying every show. Grateful for the support team around us that play such a huge part in these results! As always the judges love our music from Equidance. Tony and Kelly you are complete geniuses and I am so pleased that we did your hard work justice last night!”

Laura Tomlinson was also in action in the Big Tour classes with Issey and Full Moon II. In the 3* Grand Prix, Laura rode to 69.348% and ninth place with Beatrice Marineau’s Johnson-sired gelding Issy; followed by seventh in the Grand Prix Special with 67.957%. Whilst the home-bred gelding Full Moon II took to the stage in the 4* Tour, earning a very respectable 70.522% and seventh in the Grand Prix, before taking fifth in the Grand Prix Freestyle with a superb mark of 75.175%.

Germany-based British rider Harrison Ashton presented Davalerian in the Under 25 classes; earning a top placing of second in the Intermediate II class with 69.069%. Lier marked Harrison’s first show with the Dante Weltino-sired 12-year-old, owned by Eques Management AB.

In the Junior ranks, team medallist Isla Sully returned to the arena with her evergreen and ever-consistent 17-year-old Vagabond de Massa, riding to three top ten placings, including sixth in the Junior Team (69.798%) and Junior Freestyle (72.408%).

Congratulations to all riders taking part and enjoying some great results. Plenty of the British international campaigners will now be looking ahead to the first domestic CDI of the season, with Hartpury hosting senior, youth and para competition at the end of the month.
