Sarah Payne and the Sheepgate Equestrian team have made the difficult decision to call time on their famous U25 Championships, marking the end of an era for a much-loved event in the North & East region.
The Sheepgate U25 Championships have been running for over twenty years and have provided a platform for young riders of all ages and abilities to shine in a positive and supportive competition environment.
The show dates back to a two-day derby event at Addington, before making a move to Keysoe. It was there that the late Bruce Grant stepped in at short notice to provide sponsorship, before a two-decade long association with the show began. The event then moved to the Grant’s home, Sheepgate Equestrian near Boston, where it grew to become the Under 25 Championships – a magical festival running over six days.
Open to all riders aged 25 and below, Sheepgate welcomed those of all levels and sections for a shot at the titles from Introductory to FEI levels. With famous outdoor evening prize givings, a holiday-like atmosphere and plenty of perpetual awards and trophies.
Many high-profile riders proudly list past success at these championships on their biographies, and the show has played host to multiple youth medallists through the years, earning valuable arena time and experience on their pathway to success.
The fixture has also been a key part of the BD Regional events calendar, with team competition at the heart of the show’s programme. Fierce competition, regional rivalry, flagpole antics and outstanding team spirit were always enjoyed by all.
British Dressage extends its immense gratitude to Sarah and all of the Sheepgate team for continuing the show in the memory of their late family member Bruce, and for providing a first-class opportunity for BD Youth riders over such a long period of time. The Sheepgate legacy will live on via another BD opportunity, and plans are already in progress to seek an alternative home for the event to continue the spirit of the show in another location. While that may not be possible in time for this summer, it will be a priority from 2027 onwards.
Lou Jones, Head of Sport, commented: “Sarah and her team at Sheepgate have played an integral part in the development of youth riders and their enjoyment of dressage. Their time, attention and effort over three decades have benefitted countless young people, and we’re committed to ensuring the Sheepgate legacy lives on. Our thanks go to Sarah, and we’ll look forward to working with the team on their remaining BD fixtures.”
Venue owner Sarah Payne gave a personal update: “As we approach our 30th year, Sheepgate Equestrian continues to evolve. Dressage has always been at the heart of what we do, and that passion remains as strong as ever. We have made the difficult decision that the 2025 Under 25s Championship here at Sheepgate Equestrian was our last one. We’re incredibly proud to have hosted the Under 25s Championships for over 20 years, and to have welcomed so many talented riders, trainers, judges, and supporters to Sheepgate.
We would like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported Sheepgate during this time and especially to British Dressage who have allowed us to develop this amazing show into what it became. We are truly grateful for the memories, the milestones and the community that we have created around this show.
We will continue to run our usual British Dressage shows throughout 2026, including the Sheepgate Tack and Togs Championships and the Summer Area Festival.”
