With the Para Home Nations taking place at Onley Grounds in Warwickshire (4 – 5 July 2025), a successful South & West squad travelled across the BD region border to raid the Home Nations in style, taking the top title home to the West Country.
Led by DO Amanda Rodgers, South & West Donald Ducks rode to golden victory in the Equissage Pulse Home Nations team competition with their four team riders – Hattie Spurling, Jason Inchley, Isabella Benfield and Alisha Robbins – each putting forward some great results to the team total of 407.135.
Winning team member Jason Inchley captured the sentiment behind the win on Facebook, saying: “What an awesome day! My teammates were amazing and really left me with nothing to do going down the centre line the second time apart from stay on, although I didn’t know that at the time!
“Thank you to all the South & West Region team riders and support teams, for just being the best! To my Donald Ducks teammates, Alisha Robbins, Isabella Benfield and Hattie Spurling... we smashed it!”
“Thanks to Amanda Rodgers for all you do in the background and to Mark Cunliffe for all the support over the days and being a great Chef d’Equipe! Thanks to Becky for grooming and cooking dinner on our first night and mum, Heather Inchley for being mine and Mark’s PA!”
“Thank you to all at Lakefield Equestrian Centre that look after Ella on a daily basis and to Amy Cox and Penbode Equine Vets for your extra input over the last month to keep Ella on the road!”
Second place went to Wales, who enjoyed a hugely successful weekend at Onley; their total of 404.008 was achieved by Loretta Joynson, Elan Williams and Liz McBurney – who as a team of three made every score count under pressure. Whilst the third spot on the podium belonged to South & East Mint Condition, with Richard Neumann, Sara Oram and Chelsea Butcher also handling the heat as a team of three to earn 399.837.
Outstanding individuals
The individual accolades were claimed by riders from four of the BD regions, with South & West earning double individual victories which contributed to their team success.
From the winning team, Jason Inchley and his own 15-year-old mare Rubin Ryella took home the Grade II Individual accolades with a total score of 131.58% earned for two uber consistent performances.
In a competitive Grade V, Hattie Spurling and Top Biats delivered further consistent South & West performances with 70.19% and 70.48% notched up across the two days. A top total of 140.67% saw them take the top step of the podium ahead of Staffordshire’s Linda DeMatteo and her KWPN Discovery-sired gelding Beant Lan, who earned a combination high score of 69.42% on Saturday to become runners up representing the North & West region. Loretta Joynson and her 14-year-old Tresais Lancelot, hailing from Wales, were third place after placing second and fourth for the two tests.
Adding further success to team Wales, Elan Williams and her beautiful long-term pony partner Brandini were victorious in the Grade I individual contest; the duo recorded 67.40% and 70.92% to contribute to an overall 138.32%. Winning team rider Alisha Robbins took the Grade I runner-up spot, whilst Scotland’s Margaret Lupton made the journey from Dumfrieds and Galloway count with a fantastic third place finish.
The Grade III Individual crown belonged to Bronze rider Chelsea Butcher with Howen Phillip; the South & East pair hailing from Surrey scored 68.88% and 70.00%, showing great form across both days of competition. North & East locked out the remaining two podium spots as Jan Cummings rode two top tests with Rhonderful Dorrells (Rhondeo x Breitling) to claim second, whilst Laura Tennant and Judith Bennett’s Legato II rose to third.
Ellie Hamilton made North & East the fourth region to earn an individual title, producing 69.40% and 68.10% on board her 19-year-old Welsh Section D Twynmelyn Aderyn Du. The pair successfully built on their success at the recent Wellington CPEDI where they earned two 1* wins. South & West’s Amy Mayho did a super job with Tanya Guy’s AES-registered August Roque for second, whilst Lesley McNaughton-Wells and the part-bred Dales pony Roandale Saxon took another podium placing in third for Scotland.
Congratulations to all combinations on a fantastic weekend of fun, team spirit and fantastic riding. Our thanks go to Onley Grounds for hosting this much-loved event.
