PRP Vehicle Checklist

PRP Rescue Services are offering their expert advice on the information you should keep in your vehicle when you are travelling horses. When travelling your horse you want to make sure you are prepared for whatever circumstances may arise, and make sure you have all the information you need to hand, to ensure you have the least stressful situation possible. 

In the event of needing to pass this information on to the services you require, you should have written down the following:

  • Vechicle make, model & registration
  • Tyre size
  • Insurance Company, contact number & policy number 
  • Breakdown company, contact number & membership number

In the event of a breakdown 

  • Check your location as precisely as possible.
  • Call your breakdown service provider for assistance.
  • They should then guide you through the incident.
  • If you feel that you are in a dangerous or vulnerable position, or that your vehicle may be causing an obstruction or danger to other road users, you can contact the local Police on 101 or the Highways Agency on 0300 1235000, making it clear that you have already arranged assistance with your breakdown provider.

In the event of an accident 

  • Check your location as precisely as possible.
  • Contact the emergency services 999. If a horse is trapped, ask for fire and rescue, and, a vet. They will guide you through the incident and take control once they are on scene.
  • Contact your insurance company.

Whilst awaiting assistance, try to avoid entering the horse compartments of your vehicle unless absolutely necessary.

Travel checklist 

Here is a checklist that you should tick off as you are packing the trailer or horsebox before you next competition or lesson! 

  • Phone & charger: Make sure you can always phone for assistance.
  • Water, hay & feed: Enough to allow for your journey being at least two to three hours longer than planned.
  • Extra rugs: It can get cold very quickly in the evenings even in the summer You may be out much later than planned.
  • Fire Extinguishers: The correct number and type for your vehicle – your local fire safety officer should be able to advise on this.
  • Any equipment necessary to assist in the loading any of the horses: You may need to transfer the horses for recovery.
  • Spare headcollar & rope: They can get broken / chewed whilst travelling, which could make transfer very difficult.
  • Spare tyre: Make sure it is checked and easily accessible 
  • High vis Jacket or waistcoat
  • Warning Triangle
  • Horse and human first aid kits
  • Head torch
  • Calmer syringe: Only use under veterinary advice and not with food to avoid choking
  • Vets phone number
