Sustainability at BD Events

We’re took a big step forward at the National Championships in September, learn more about what changes we made and how this can inspire you to reduce our environmental impact at BD events.

During the LeMieux National Dressage Championships in 2024, we took a step forward to make the whole event more sustainable and to lead by example, to show what can be done across our regular BD shows and championships events.

There were a few things across site that were implemented in order for us to reduce our carbon footprint.

  • Where possible battery powered generators were used.
  • All waste on site was sorted and recycled post event and there were a number of green recycling bins across the event, making it clear and easy for all of those attending to recycle their rubbish.
  • Our officials were all provided with reusable, branded water-bottles, to significantly reduce the amount of plastic waterbottles used during the event.
  • On the BD trade stand we had a dedicated area to help share our knowledge and show our membership how you can get invovled at home and on your yard.
  • All of our winners received a little green gift, with a commemorative seed packet.

There are many things we can do to help the environment when out competing. We know that a healthy environment supports the health and wellbeing of humans and horses alike, therefore by prioritising both the environment and embedding it as a consideration in all of our decisions, we can ensure a more sustainable future for everyone. This includes when we are out competiing;

Take with you reusable coffee cups and water bottles. Whilst you are at a venue, there may be an onsite coffee van or cafe, we can reduse the number of disposable coffee cups used if you remember to take your own with you. This is the same for water bottles, the majority of our venues will allow you access to clean running water, we can reduce the number of water bottles we buy, when refilling our own.

Where safe to do so sharing transport with someone else going to the same event as you can help reduce the emissions created by travelling back and forth from a competition. If you are able to travel mulipul horses together, or travel alongside your coach, or support team, we can reduce our carbon footprint.
