Three days of high quality competition including an outstanding Grand Prix debut by Charlotte Dujardin and Gio set the domestic dressage year off to a super start at Addington High Profile Show (10 – 12 January 2020).

Charlotte Dujardin and Gio 2019

Charlotte and her Grand Prix first-timer, the compact bright chestnut Gio (Apache x Tango) – pictured last year, gave us an insight into their future, with an outstanding mark of 79.56% to win Saturday’s Grand Prix in undisputable fashion. The runner up, on 73.73%, was Sonnar Murray-Brown with Erlentanz, whilst Sadie Smith and Keystone Dynamite completed the podium on 70.90%.

Gio may be petite at just 16hh but what he lacks in height he makes up for in heart and ability, and the Grand Prix work looks so natural to him. Charlotte first spotted the KWPN gelding when teaching a clinic in California in the autumn of 2016. Her pupil Amelie Kovac was riding the then five year old when he caught Charlotte’s eye. Charlotte later bought him and he arrived around Halloween. For this reason, he was given the stable name Pumpkin. Gio is the reigning National Inter II Champion.

Charlotte also dominated Saturday’s Small Tour classes with Emma Blundell’s exciting chestnut mare, Mount St John Valencia (Vivaldi x Ferragamo). Ten year old ‘Valerie’ is another 2019 LeMieux National Championships winner, having taken the Prix St Georges and Inter I Freestyle, as well as the Dressage Future Elite Championship at HOYS.

He was amazing and I’m so proud of how hard he tried for me.

Charlotte took to Facebook on Saturday night to say, “The beautiful Pumpkin (Gio) co-owned with my friend, Renai Hart, did his first Grand Prix today and achieved 79.5%. He was amazing and I’m so proud of how hard he tried for me. Mount St John Valencia also won the PSG with 77% and in the Inter I, also with 77%. Such a super mare that I am very excited about for the future. Thank you so much to Alan [Davies] and the whole team for the support today. [I’m] very very happy.”

On Friday, Dannie Morgan and Knoxx’s Figaro posted a personal best of 72.98% to win a competitive Fairfax Saddles Prix St Georges Gold, plus he achieved second to Dujardin in Saturday’s Saracen Horse Feeds Inter I Gold. The 28 year old from Hampshire, who continues to event successfully alongside his dressage career, also competed in the Grand Prix with his own Southern Cross Braemar, scoring 66.13% for 14th.

Jayne Turney took Sunday’s Prix St Georges with Shirley Rixon’s ten year old Starnberg son, Penhaligon’s Jupiter. A score of 72.237% earned them the win ahead of Leah Beckett with Henry Boswell’s En Cru (Jazz x Grand Cru) on plus-70%.
