BD Abroad: Team NAF fly high in Hagen

Last week saw a highly successful trip to the Continent for the 11 youth riders representing Great Britain at the Hagen CDIO/CDI ‘Future Champions’ show hosted at Hof Kasselmann, Germany (12 – 17 June). 

The NAF Pony team, made up of Holly Kerslake, Annabella Pidgley and Sophie Taylor, excelled themselves in the CDIO Nations Cup event earning a deserved third place spot on the podium behind the ever-consistent German and Danish teams. Whilst the NAF Young Riders finished in fifth place after a solid combined effort in the Nations Cup team test from Amber Barton, Dylan Deutrom and Anna Jesty.

Children on Horses representative Lily Payne enjoyed a brilliant week of results including an impressive fourth place. Lily and Ann Savage’s Beckhouse Cancara scored 70.06% in the COH Preliminary test for sixth place before going on to improve two places in the Team test splitting the German squad who filled the surrounding top seven spots.

In the Pony ranks, Annabella Pidgley with her mother Sarah’s Ine notched up three plus 70% results in the CDIO competition culminating in a brilliant 72.45% in the Freestyle final. Fellow team mates Holly Kerslake and Sophie Taylor were hot on her heels improving throughout the week to both score over 71% in the final test. In the CDI Pony classes, Germany based Lilah Gibbs was the highest placed Brit in the freestyle final scoring 70.33% with the black gelding Non Plus Ultra. Meanwhile, Sophie and Annabella both enjoyed further good results with their second rides of the show, Samantha Brown’s Le Chiffre and Sarah Pidgley’s Cognac IX.

Anna Jesty and her own Aquiro led the British team in the CDIO Young Rider Team test before going on to repeat this success in the freestyle competition scoring 69.37% for eighth. Amber Barton and her own chestnut stallion Labiat were a whisker behind in ninth with 69.33%, repeating her solid performance from Friday’s Individual test which earned the duo a creditable sixth place finish.

Dylan Deutrom earned a win in the CDIO Young Rider small final with a fabulous 70.08% aboard Matt Hicks and Jackie Vaughan’s Zorro, improving on their percentages throughout the week in their first CDIO event together.

The CDI competition saw Charlotte Dicker and her former European Championship partner Sabatini score the highest team test mark of the week for the Young Riders. They posted 68.87% for ninth, only beaten by the German riders led by Semmieke Rothenberger with Geisha 194. Alex Harrison took tenth spot in the same test with another great score of 68.72%; it was a promising week overall for Alex and his own seven-year-old gelding Diamond Hill in their first International, the pair went on to earn an impressive seventh place in the Individual test with an elusive 70.14%.

Speaking from his Facebook page Alex said, “Damo exceeded all expectations every step of the way and I couldn’t be more proud of him for his first trip across the pond. Another debutant for Britain was 19-year-old Megan Ingham, who made her first appearance in the Young Rider tests with her mother Coral Ingham’s Wanadoo. The pair successfully contested the CDI competition with three respectable scores.
