BD Presents: Isobel Wessels

Isobel Wessels joins Gareth Hughes, Michael Eilberg and equine vet Brad Hill as part of the presenting team for BD Presents… Harmonious Progression with Rothera Bray.

Isobel Wessels is an FEI 5* judge, FEI Course Director, Level 3 coach and former Grand Prix rider with more than 30 years’ involvement in the sport and has trained riders all over the world. Her career spans competing, coaching, judging and developing horses and riders to international level, including serving on the judging panel at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Isobels passion for horses began at an early age, although she took ballet lessons as a child, her fascination with horses eventually led to riding lessons and a journey that would take her around the world. Inspired to pursue judging in the 1980s, she steadily worked her way up to where she is today. Throughout her career, Isobel has remained deeply involved in both training and riding, reflecting her lifelong dedication to the equestrian world.

Isobel will be offering her invaluable insight and knowledge to those attending BD Presents. Having judged the World Breeding Championships for young horses on numerous occasions, she will also share valuable pointers for both riders and judges. Isobel’s sessions will explore how correct development through the Scales of Training builds confident, balanced horses, with quality basic passes that build a strong foundation for future progression. Her sessions will also explore the relationship between rider biomechanics and horse performance, using practical demonstrations to show how improvements in suppleness, self-carriage and the horse’s overall way of going can enhance the rider’s position, balance and influence.
