On the busiest week of the winter calendar Bishop Burton College, Yorkshire, took their turn to host the Northern Winter Regional fixture with both local riders, and those from further afield, shining on their route to gaining coveted tickets to the NAF Five Star Winter Championships (16 – 19 February 2019).

Enjoying yet another successful Winter Regional Championships, Humberside rider Lara Edwards took home two titles with her 2018 BD Small Tour Champion Jazzed Up, owned and bred by Tracey and Laura Milner. The accomplished duo scored 71.10% to top the Charles Owen Advanced Medium Gold before going on to complete the set with victory in the Nupafeed Advanced Medium Freestyle Gold, the score for this test an impressive 73.17%.

Jazzed Up, a 10 year old son of Jazz known an ‘Felix’, has clocked up no less than 10 regional titles from Novice to Prix St Georges with Lara in the saddle, who’s produced the gelding from the age of five. Speaking from her Facebook page Lara said, “Weeks like this don’t happen often so I’m going to enjoy it! Advanced Medium Gold CHAMPION, Advanced Medium Freestyle Gold CHAMPION, Prix St Georges Gold reserve Champion (by 1.5 marks - gutted) but what a horse and this is on 1/2 power, had a few teething problems on the run up but still a super star and bring on the nationals in April this boy will be out for a national title!”

Patsy Bartram made the journey from Derbyshire worthwhile to also claim a duo of wins with her own six year old, Greenacres Cadiz. The smart black gelding excelled at Elementary level scoring 70.36% to top the Equi-Trek Elementary Gold and subsequently the Suregrow Elementary Freestyle Gold with a whopping 74.74%. Mr Snowman, competed for a short spell by Patsy in 2018, also notched up a win in the Blue Chip Novice Silver with Charlotte Clark. The charming Irish Draught also took Charlotte’s mother Lesley to third in the KBIS Preliminary Silver.

Claire Johnston and Sensation repeated their success at this show in 2018 with another Regional title, this time in the Equi-Trek Elementary Silver. To duo topped the podium convincingly having posted 74.90%, the highest score of the show. The eye-catching black mare by Sir Oldenburg is no stranger to Winter Championship success having won last year’s Blue Chip Novice Silver Championships at Hartpury with amateur rider and full-time mother of three Claire in the saddle. Claire bought her superstar partner as an unbacked three year old and has produced her sympathetically, and successfully through the levels.

Hoping to gain qualification spots through to the Gala Performance freestyle finals will be Magic Prix St Georges winner Paul Hayler and Superflex Intermediate I winner Louise Davison. BD Training Director and popular rider/trainer Paul produced a polished performance with Sandra Cowing’s Balero II to win the competitive Prix St Georges qualifier with 69.91%. Whilst Louise excelled in the Superflex Intermediate I on board her reliable Desperados sired partner, De Galles, the pair scored 66.40%.

Thanks go to the dedicated team at Bishop Burton, the Winter Championships class sponsors and all involved with another exciting Regional Championships. Congratulations to all qualified combinations and to everyone who took part.
