The 2019 Winter Regional Championships continued last week at Summerhouse Equestrian in Gloucestershire (14 – 16 February 2019) as 20 new Regional Champions were crowned and many came a step closer to their NAF Five Star Winter Championship goals.

Birmingham rider Alexzandra Houldcroft (23) claimed two tickets to Hartpury with Cavallina Herself (pictured), her Cardinar x Weltmeyer eight-year-old. The Paul Friday-trained combination achieved second place and a coveted qualification spot in Wednesday’s Baileys Horse Feeds Novice Freestyle Silver before winning Sunday’s KBIS Preliminary regional title with a score of 70.23%.

Alexzandra’s tactful riding overcame a blip earlier in the week when she retired the young mare from a rather spooky, unsettled Novice Silver test. “We played the test safe after our mishaps on Thursday and it payed off! I couldn’t be any prouder of Cavallina and how much she tries for me! [I] Can’t thank Paul Friday enough, the support and training you put into us, and the team back at Chase lodge!”

At the FEI levels, Katie Bailey dominated, winning both the Magic Prix St Georges and the Superflex Intermediate I with two of her exciting rides.

The thirty-year-old Gloucestershire rider first took Wednesday’s Magic Prix St Georges regional title on a score of 72.01% aboard Hannah Dovey’s Eagle-Nouvelle (pictured), a Dutch bred 10-year-old son of Singapore; before taking Thursday’s Superflex Intermediate I regional crown with Lesley Forlee’s Bocelli VI (Belissimo M x Riccione) on 71.66%.

In their third year of competition together, Katie and ‘Eddie’, as Eagle–Nouvelle is known at home, have been achieving PSG scores of up to plus-74%. Bocelli VI, with whom Katie won the Advanced Medium Silver National title in 2016, is now 12 and training Grand Prix at home.

“We had great results at Summerhouse regionals and the sun was shining!” enthused Katie on her Katie Bailey Dressage Facebook. “Three out of three qualifying for the Winter Championships. Eddie getting a fab score 72% to win the PSG. Then Eric [Elinda] second in the Medium with 70% having only ever been to five shows in his life. And finally Bocelli, first in the Inter I with 71.6%. So [it was] a successful outing and [I’m] looking forward to Hartpury!”

Katie, who learnt her craft training with and working as stable rider for Carl Hester, set up on her own in 2014 and is now based a stone’s throw from Carl’s Newent home.

Laura Wollen (30) who hails from Ledbury in Herefordshire won her ticket for Hartpury by taking the Nupafeed Advanced Medium Freestyle Gold aboard Woodcroft Francisco (pictured right). The pair scored 72.833%, just ahead of second-placed Jacky Stopler with her Lusitano stallion, Furo (72.00%). Woodcroft Francisco (Fidertanz x Wolkentanz II) is a nine-year-old gelding owned by Julie Steed.

“I had an amazing start today to the 2019 Winter Regionals with Julie Steed’s Woodcroft Francisco becoming Advanced Medium Freestyle Gold Regional Champion at Summerhouse Equestrian! With a score of 72.83% Frank has set the bar high.”

British Dressage thanks Summerhouse Equestrian, the Winter Championships class sponsors and all involved for a successful Regional Championships. Congratulations to all qualified combinations and to everyone who took part.
