Following on from a busy week at the NAF Five Star Winter Championships, riders headed back to Addington for the premier league (24 – 26 April) on the quest to earn their qualification to the KBIS Young Horse and Pony Semi-Finals, and the LeMieux National Championships to be held at Somerford Park in August.

The LeMieux Grand Prix saw some of our most exciting combinations competing, but it was Hertfordshire-based Daniel Sherriff aboard his own Incognito (Glocks Voice x Ferro) who took the win on the combinations highest premier league score to date, 73.152%, in front of judges Mary Robins (C), Leanne Wall (M) and Alison Duck (E).

For Daniel, the event marked a memorable return, as he explained: “Addington was a great start to the season. I have been in hiding for just over a year so to make such an exciting come back was absolutely fantastic. The fact that the class was so big meant I could spend the day sitting in the sunshine with old and new friends watching some great sport and waiting nervously to see if I could hold on to my early lead.”

“I am over the moon with the progress Inca [Incognito] has made whilst concentrating on his training at home for the past year, and to be able to show some of it off at such a prestigious event was a proud moment.”

Behind Daniel, Alexander Harrison-West placed second aboard his own Kickback (Galaxie x Florencio I) with 71.015%, and Greg Sims placed third with Stena Hoerner’s Waverley Fellini (Fürstenball x Sandro Hit), scoring a personal best of 69.783%.

The Stübben Intermediate II was won by eighteen year old Ruby Hughes aboard Fanella Quinn’s Farrell (Fabregas x Davignnnon) with 71.765%. After just a handful of shows together, the combination are proving themselves to be going from strength to strength, impressing judges Richard Baldwin (C), Alison Duck (M) and Leanne Wall (E). Rebecca Jane Edwards riding her own Dita Von Teese (Dimaggio x Conteur) came second on a score of 70.539%, and Michael Eilberg took third aboard MSJ Dante VX on a score of 68.980%.

Giving riders two opportunities to gain a qualification, the D&H Intermediate I was held on both Friday and Saturday. On Friday, Micheal Eilberg took the win aboard Geraldine Eilberg’s EDH Saubermond (Sezuan x Dancier) with 71.117%. In second place was Sarah-Jane Lanning riding her own Choice 1 (Dayano x El Corona), who scored 69.167%. Darren Hicks took third place aboard Fiona Langdale and Suzie Leon’s Kinnear (by Franklin) with a score of 68.726%.

On Saturday, the D&H Intermediate I was won by Bryony Goodwin, who followed up her success from last week’s NAF Five Star Winter Championships by taking home three titles over the weekend.  Bryony took three wins aboard David Pincus’ Sheepcote Just Daisy (Johnson x Don Schufro), with winning scores of 69.461% in the D&H Intermediate I, 70.637% in the Fairfax Saddles Prix St Georges, and 72.042% in the D&H Intermediate I Freestyle.

The young rider tests boasted hot classes and close results as our best young riders took to the stage for the ever-popular FEI tests. The pony team test was won by Ella Fraser riding Rebecca Frazer’s Brouwershaven’s Viceroy on a score of 69.619%. Aboard the fifteen-year-old gelding, Ella impressed judges Lotte Olsen (C), Suzi Douglas-Osborn (M) and Alice Oppenheimer (E) to come away with 69.910%. Annabella Howe came second aboard her own Champignon Sauvage with a score of 68.905%, and India Adams finished third riding Emma Adams’ Reitland’s Don Totilas with 68.857%.

The Junior Team Test saw Ellie Harrington aboard her own Ice LH win on a personal best score of 72.071%. Second place was awarded to Ella-Grace Dovey riding Harriette Williams’ Creto with 70.959% and in third place was Sofia Games riding Katie Oliver-Games’ Bovary JBM with a final score of 69.697%. In the Young Rider Team Test, it was Belgian Emma Van Damme who rode her way to first and third; riding her own Maykel to take the win on a score of 71.471%, and her own BKS Fantasia who finished third on 66.912%. Ruby Hughes achieved her second podium of the show, claiming second place aboard Claire Wyatt’s Fire Kracka, in the nine-year-old stallion’s first premier league of the season, to finish on a score of 67.990%.

In the Children on Horses tests, it was a double win for Sebastian Houlston, riding Joanne Houlston’s Full Fusion BS. On Saturday in the team test, Sebastian won by over two percent, to finish on a score of 72.750%. On Sunday the combination then contested in the individual test to win by nearly nine percent, on a fantastic final result of 77.037%. This combination have been unbeatable so far, with this being their third premier league double win this season, having previously taken the victories in the team and individual tests at Vale View and Myerscough Premier Leagues. Upon reflection, Sebastian recounted: “This was my first time competing at Addington, it has a really big show atmosphere which I found a little daunting at first. I think the atmosphere got to me as I was a little tense and nervous riding the Team test, so I didn’t ride as well as I would have liked (I must remember to breath!) but Flo really looked after me.  I had a really super warm up for the Individual test which gave me so much confidence going into the ring and I was delighted with my test.  I had more confidence to push the power and cadence whilst keeping the connection and balance on my seat, which I feel I did for most parts of the test.”

“This is my first season competing so to get these sorts of results so early on in my dressage journey is really cool. I took the ride on Flo in November, and she has taught me so much in such a short period of time. I am enjoying every second riding her and I’m so excited to progress through the levels with her.”

Thanks go to the organisers at Addington Equestrian for delivering a superbly run event, and congratulations to all riders and connections for their hard work and excellent performances throughout the competition.
