We’re delighted to launch the BD Marshal Programme on the BD Learning Hub. Developed with experienced BD Stewards and selected venues, the course aims to equip Marshals with the knowledge and confidence to support successful competitions.

Great competitions rely on great people. Venue staff and volunteers play a vital role in keeping every BD competition running smoothly, creating a welcoming experience and helping to protect the welfare of our equine partners. To support these essential team members, the new BD Marshal Programme provides the knowledge and confidence needed to carry out this important role.

Working alongside Organisers, Judges and Stewards, a BD Marshal is a visible and approachable presence on the showground. From collecting sheets to supervising the warm-up arena, they help the day run safely and efficiently, support a positive competition environment and keep equine welfare at the heart of the event.

Designed to develop confident and knowledgeable Marshals, the programme has been developed in collaboration with experienced BD Stewards and selected venues that helped pilot the programme. Hosted on the BD Learning Hub, the course explores five key areas:

  • The Competition Day: understand what makes a successful competition day and learn how to handle conversations confidently and constructively.
  • BD Values: discover the principles that underpin every BD activity and competition, including safeguarding.
  • Equine Welfare: learn to recognise signs of good and poor welfare in the arenas and across the venue, and understand how to report concerns to BD and key event staff.
  • Arena Management: gain the practical skills to help manage an arena safely and efficiently, creating the best possible experience for everyone.
  • Next Steps: explore opportunities to continue developing, including the Steward education pathway.

After completing the course and a short quiz, successful BD Marshals will receive their Marshal certificate. Their venue will also receive a distinctive red BD Marshal armband for them to wear on competition days, helping competitors quickly identify who to approach for support.
