Preview: KBIS Young Horse Semi Finals at Northallerton

Running alongside the Summer Regional Championships, it’s time to tune in for the KBIS Young Horse Semi Finals at Northallerton (Friday 25 July), where some of our top young horses aim to qualify for the KBIS Young Horse Finals.
It’s time to get ready for the next set of promising young talent as they compete for their spot at the LeMieux National Championships, held at Somerford Park, Cheshire (10 – 13 September). Following the hot competition from Hartpury the other week, combinations will be making the trip to North Yorkshire to compete for the final places.
In the Four-Year-Old class, Fiona Bigwood will be presenting aboard her homebred mare BPS Supreme Bella (Sezuan x Don Juan de Hus), who qualified from the Hickstead Premier League with 9.56. Lily Laughton will be presenting Alicia Laughton’s Dutch-bred stallion Special Me HH (For Ferrero x Ampere), who qualified twice. Once, under Lily Laughton from the Wellington Premier League where they scored 9.02, and once under Dannie Morgan from the Parwood Qualifier, where they scored 8.66. Lucina Elliot will also be attending with multiple rides; however, the ride who achieved the highest score in the qualifying series is Antonia Brown’s Dutch-bred SJL Sunshine M (Livius x Everdale), who qualified under Bryony Goodwin from Weston Lawns back in April with 8.70.
Presenting aboard largely British Bred rides throughout the competition, Amy Woodhead is entered to compete on three four-year-olds that were bred by Emma Blundell at the Mount St John Stud in Thirsk. MSJ Sominka (Secret x Gribaldi), MSJ QT (MSJ Q x Quitender) and MSJ Dynalady (Dynamic Dream x Donnerhall) are all due to compete under Amy, where they qualified on 7.86, 8.10 and 8.70 respectively. MSJ Dynalady is the second highest British-bred horse to qualify behind Fiona Bigwood’s BPS Supreme Bella.
Within this round of the Semi-Finals, there are eight horses from the Mount St John stud. In the four-year-olds, Emma Littlewood completes the line-up with MSJ Be Schufro (Be Sure x Foundation). In the five-year olds, Amy Woodhead will be contending a further two rides who are owned by Emma Blundell: MSJ RSVP (Revolution x Vivaldi) and MSJ R Evolution (Revolution x Furst Heinrich). Ruby Hughes will also be presenting aboard The Ruby Syndicate’s Mount St John Lady O'Bertje (Lord Europe x Contango), who was purchased for breeding by the Mount St John Stud and later sold for Ruby to take the ride.
In The Five-Year-Old class, Lily Laughton will be presenting Angelica V (Dynamic Dream x Ampere). The young chestnut mare, owned and bred by Dr Amanda Crouch, qualified from the Hickstead Premier League with an outstanding score of 9.50. The second-highest scoring combination to have qualified is another ride of Amy Woodhead's; Zebedee V (Zackerey x Benvenuto), who was bred by Nicola Keenan and is owned by Darcas Lever, qualified from Kingswood Equestrian with 8.94 in June. Another British-bred entry due to compete is Sarah Millis on her own Toddington Reet Petite (Valverde x Lord Leatherdale). Bred by Camilla Alexandra Brogaard, the young mare has also been selected to go to the FEI WBFSH World Breeding Championships in Verden, Germany (4 – 9 August), and qualified from the Parwood Equestrian Centre qualifier with 8.54.
In the Six-Year-Old class, the highest scoring entry from the qualifiers is Penny Smith and her own and Leonid 2 (Fabritius x Lord Leopold). The German-bred gelding qualified from Chard Equestrian with 8.70 in June, following their first campaign at Little Mill where they scored 7.92. The next highest scorer comes from Bryony Goodwin and Antonia Brown’s German-bred Simply Secret (Secret x Waikiki), who qualified from Weston Lawns EC with 8.62. The highest scoring British-bred entry comes from Alice Oppenheimer with Sarah Oppenheimer and Caroline Dibden’s Headmore So Sapphire (So Unique x Belissimo M), who qualified from Parwood Equestrian with 8.30. Bred at the Headmore Stud by Sarah, the chestnut mare has become a regular face at the championships, having placed second and fourth at the NAF Five Star Winter Championships back in April.
In the Seven-Year-Olds, our highest-scoring entry comes from the British-bred gelding Quality Always Wins MFS (Quantensprung x Krack C). Bred by the MFS Studfarm in Scotland and piloted by owner Jack Morris, the pair qualified from Rockrose Equestrian on 75.820% back in May. The next highest scorer comes from Lisa Marriott with Peter Belshaw’s Dutch-bred Times Orwell (Glock’s Toto JR x Negro), who qualified from Kingswood Equestrian Centre with 75.220%. The next highest-scorer comes from another British-bred entry and is ridden by Greg Sims. Owned by Stena Hoerner, First Dance T (Dark Glamour W x For Romance) was bred by Angela Walker and qualified from the Vale View Premier League in February where they scored 71.40%.
